Less mainstream appeal.

This.
Most of the video game guys I know who work today are getting rushed/bullied, so they have to hurry and not take time to put a lot of work into making sure everything goes correctly.
I'd like for them to be able to take their time, again. :P

Re: What do you all want to come back in Video Games?
One good idea that i think about this games thread "specially rpg"
something new on ps3 or x360 a rpg like "Legend of Dragon"
Graphic are cheap, but the battle mode is very special
you can compare this to a rpg+stepgames
battle still start like original Final Fantasy battle but when you attack you must press the (X) button to make a combo.....
after a certain time you get new attack with more and more combo
sometime enemies counter attack and you must press the (square) boutton to continue the combo.
Story kinda tragic, but you cant stop playing until the end....
normal video suck
but important video was very cool when ps came out.
They did not make a second of those series :S
May be im the only one that found this game cool lol
But i give a 9/10 for a Play Station 1 lol
i hope one day that Dart will be on future console 8)

Pokemon Snap 2.
With the obligatory out of the way, I guess I could say something cool like "innovation", or "more complexity", or "more mind-blowingly cool graphics" or something... but really, all you need is something that is not only fun in concept (a decent audience won't show if your game doesn't even sound entertaining), is fun in reality, but also has a replayable quality.
Take Pokemon Snap, for example. It's basically a gimmick so successful it stopped being gimmicky. The concept is to take pictures of various pokemon and you'd be scored on the quality of your shots and rated via a point system. In practice? This worked wonderfully: you could pick up the game and absolutely suck at it but still progress, and it added enough challenge (+ satisfaction for great shots) to keep your attention span longer than the 2+ hours it took to beat the game. Replayability is definitely there, as you'll likely want to improve your shots, get luckier, etc.
I'm not saying copy Pokemon Snap, but rather suggesting that it managed to start off in the negative (gimmick) and work its way up to being a great game, so it had to have done a lot right.
Tl;dr: fun, both in theory and practice + replayability*
Replayability: Not forcing your user to go back through your game, but rather them actually wanting to go back themselves (i.e: their own free will).
