Too lazy to read the thread but I thought if you own an original copy of something, it's legal to own a downloaded version? I don't know if it's true I remember reading this.

He said he owns a copy of the game but that the disc is too scratched to be used to authenticate. I recommended a way to fix the problem without resorting to unlicensed hacks that could potentially open his system's vulnerabilities.

You might be morally justified in downloading an unlicensed copy of a game you purchased, but it's still an illegal copy if the end user license agreement doesn't say you can do that.

Which it won't, unless the software is legitimately available over a download-only distribution to begin with, and even then, you'd be required to get the software from the source I expect.

Backup copies are legal (so long as they're only for archival purposes, not to share), but they're still against most EULA as far as I know.

A no cd crack is usually just a small iso that fools the game into thinking the game cd is in the drive. It isn't actually a copy of the game and doesn't have the game in it. It sort of works, but audio and movies in game usually cause it to crash.

No-CD patches are legal.

Even if you own the game, downloading it is still illegal. That is the way our legal system works. You are entitled to one backup copy, but you must make your own copy from your own disc. Otherwise it's illegal.

Likewise, ROMs are illegal unless you rip them yourself for backup purposes.

And Izzy, 99% of the time, a No-CD patch is a .exe file with the same name as the game's filename. If this were called "Morrowind.exe", the No-CD patch would be an .exe file named "Morrowind.exe".

Well if you ILLEGALLY download Morrowind and you are trying to get it to work with the NO-CD Patch/Crack then go download another one or something. You can goto plenty of TORRENT/No-CD/Crack Websites to download it. :P
