gameplay and story is more important to me. its not the graphics that make games great. its how environments are setup to match the gameplay and story.

Graphics don't matter much to me. Story and gameplay are needed much more than graphics because you can have the best looking game around, but it can be boring to play. Art style is an important part too.

Take the Katamari games for instance. Definitely not the best looking on the PS2, but it is fun to play and has the weird art style to go with the story. Strange story, strange graphics, fun game.

I love how in threads like these people are like "oh man graphics suck who wants a realistic game anyway? Pshhhhh" yet in reality most people gravitate towards pretty games. If the majority of consumers weren't shallow, there wouldn't be nearly as big a focus on graphics. People DO judge the book by the cover, so developers have spent much time and money on making really good graphics. Graphics aren't everything, sure, but they get you sales, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

One thing I will say, though, is that most game companies focus WAY TOO MUCH on still photograph quality. A while back, when DoD: Source was about to release, Valve released some videos of their motion blur effects and whatnot that were going into the game. They admitted that the still images looked bad, but that in motion it was much better looking. They were right. You couldn't hardly tell what the screenshots were pictures of, but in the video everything looked much more realistic, despite DoD not having anywhere near the greatest graphics. I'd like to see more companies shift their focus from still picture quality to realistic in-motion quality.

Graphics are important for a system, but not necessary. Best example: Lair looks beautiful, but the gameplay is difficult and its just not that great of a game. Yeah it looks amazing so it gets attention, but I want solid gameplay. Then you have Final Fantasy VII. Its an old game w/ hideous graphics by todays standard, but its one of the best games around. Of course you also have Final Fantasy XIII coming out in december which promises to have great gameplay, storyline, and graphics. So yeah gameplay is more important, but why argue which is more important when you can have both in a single awesome SquareEnix developed package.

I like a ton of games with shit graphics.
Like Elebits, that game is insanely fun, but the graphics are terrible, but I bought it because it was so insanely fun.
