If the magnet's strong enough, yeah.

The naked XBOX will play your homebrew stuff and act modded and everything, but since they didn't want you doing that, they put in all the extra hardware and firmware to disallow that. The magnet just neutralizes all the parts you don't want and will leave you with what you do.

I just used a kitchen magnet with mine, at it worked like a dream. It was pretty cool playing Halo 2 with a whole bunch of custom mods, like where the Needler would shoot Plasma Grenades.

          Good times, I must say.

Yeah, after you use the magnet, a rule of thumb to see if it worked without having to put it back together and boot it up again is to shuffle your feet across the carpet and then put your finger on the main board. If a little spark hits the board it means that the "lines" have been modded.

my idea of soft modding involves baby powder, glue, thumb tacks, and a hammer.

This post is obviously a joke, you'll get shocked from static electricity.

However, the magnet stuff is very possible based on how the Xbox is made.

Dunno if it's been said yet, but the magnet should be 1 inch by 1 inch. In other words a nice generic one would work in terms of softmoding.

EDIT: Yeah, it works pretty quickly, too. I just tried it.

as far as i know, that would destroy and xbox, if it works, then explain how it works please.

Re: does any1 know how to softmod a xbox

Skatcat - Guido already explained why it would not destroy your xbox:

Well, rare earth Neodymium magnets are around 1.8 Tesla. Weak ceramic ones are around 0.35. So it's gotta be sufficiently large. Mainly, like you said, to avoid a weak field just modifying some pieces of information on its field "lines" (a stronger field has many more of those lines and will cover areas more thoroughly).

I don't have much experience when it comes to buying magnets, but if you get a pair that can clamp onto the top and bottom of your dinner table (assuming, roughly, an inch to an inch and a half of thickness), you oughta be good. That is, you don't need an electromagnet or anything.

Oh, and one more thing, they're weak anyway, but DO NOT use refrigerator magnets. They have their poles bent back on themselves so that both poles are on the same side (that's also the reason that only one side of them will stick to your fridge). That will permanently screw up your box if it's strong enough.
                        Guido is trustworthy.
