that seems like a dumb rule. why don't you just split it into the two categories that they are? arcade racing, and simulation. now hate the simulation racers which aren't quite realistic enough, and love the arcade racers which are just pure fun.
I'll trade you this delicious doorstop for your crummy old danish.
    Done, and done.

There is only a few differences between the two (powerslide, new items, and more characters) and I think they make it better.

btw: I still play now and then...when healing in MS (^_^)

Don't forget that Mariokart DS has 20 more tracks than MK64 and MKD, too.

Here's a rundown for people newer to the MK series...

Super Mariokart, the first game, was pracically revolutionary. I'm not sure if it was the first game on the SNES that played like a 3D game, but it did, which is pretty awsome. The tracks were basic and flat and all followed one theme, but I'll admit, for what the SNES could handle, it did good. Although very simple, Mario Curcuit 2 was my favorite back then because it was cool hopping over everyone :P I'm sure my opinion would be different now, but back then, that was cool. All of the tracks were based off one of either for or five themes, somewhere around there (excluding Rainbow Road), unfortunately. The battle arenas were pretty off the hook, too, mainly because they were simplistic Personally I wouldn't mind seeing some of those battle arenas come back; they were plain awsome.

N64 definately had some of the best tracks to hit Mariokart, taking advantage of the N64's technology and delivering tracks that all had their own themes. I'm not saying that they're the best like ignorant fools who say the SNES is better than the current gen systems, I'm being honest. There were a few good ones on the SNES, GBA, GCN, and the DS versions, but by far, Mariokart 64 had the best tracks, and the largest number of tracks you just wanna play over and over again. Yoshi Valley, Donkey Kong's jungle stage (forgot the name), and Toad's Turnpike were favorites of mine, and I was very dissapointed when they weren't on the DS version. This game also intruduced fake item blocks and spiney shells, plusses there. In this version, unfortunately, there were 4 less tracks than the SNES one, some of the tracks just plain out you wanted to not ever play, and the karts were a multitude of sprites that made a 3D illusion (at least I think XD it really looked like it, from my memory). Oh, and the battle arenas all kicked ass in this one, too, with Double Decker being my favorite.

The GBA version was best for having most tracks. Not only did it take all of the SNES tracks (making the SNES version OBSOLEETE!), but it had 20 original tracks added to that. The tracks were flat, but they were all very unique and did good. The best reason to have this was for the 40 tracks, which was AMAZING, considering the SNES version had 20 and the N64 version had 16. Other than that, it played a lot like Mariokart for SNES. Battle mode I vaguely remember. I only played it once, so I can't comment.

The Gamecube version took some of the elements of the tracks in Mariokart 64 and made tracks off those elements, not better, not worse, but different. For example, with the cars from Toad's Turnpike, that element was incorporated into Mushroom City (probably wrong on that name) and Mushroom Bridge. One thing that I didn't like about this game was that it lost its charm in the courses somehow. It wasn't the two person per kart thing or anything else, I just believe the courses lost some awsomeness. Mind you, Wario Colliseum was so much better than Wario Stadium (Wario Stadium was an awsome course to begin with while Wario Colliseum suprisingly made it look like trash), and the tracks were all great, unlike some N64 tracks which you just dreaded, but I just believe it lost some charm. Oh, and it had less shortcuts than the N64 version, not much less, but a little bit, a minus. There were a crapload of items added to the table. A CRAPLOAD. All of them were pretty awsome, too. The only dissapointment in the items was that there was no ghost. I would of been happier if they replaced boo's special item (which is random out of all the items, in other words, cheap XD) with the ghost they unfortunately took out. Battle mode was a major improvement. Plusses for that. The battle arenas, for the most part, weren't as great at N64, but the modes played out nice (bo-omb blast being total ownage, I swear, I had so much fun with that), and there were 6 arenas, with every single version before only having 4.

The DS game is practically a contradiction. Although it practically rips tracks concepts and designs from the Gamecube version and gives them a new theme (Waluigi Pinball is almost the same as the Donkey Kong one from MKDD, Airship Fortress was a lot like Bowsers Castle, and Shroom Ridge was similar to Mushroom Bridge. There are a few other similarities, too), it just works out to be awsome. In my opinion, this game wouldn't of worked if it weren't for the fact that there are 32 total tracks, 16 being "blasts from the past" (unfortunately the tracks chosen were definately not the best for their games, except for Sky Garden, Koopa Beach 2, and Baby Park, which I can concur to). This version brought along a lot, though. You can play "quick games" like in the GBA version (with the computer difficulty and class being seperate adjustments), mission mode, and probably my favorite addition by FAR, BATTLE MODE FINALLY HAS AI, after years and years and years of waiting. I can FINALLY play Battle Mode all by myself, I'm so damn happy for that. There is also Wifi, which gives this game endless replayability, as human players are so much more challenging than computers. Some of the major dissapointments were bo-omb blast being removed from battle, shortcuts were removed for almost everything (ven the "blast from the past" courses were stripped of shortcuts), and most dissapointingly, not all courses in Wifi are playable, unfortunately "not all" meaning the most enjyable were cut out (probably for synching problems because the courses stripped for the most part contained a lot of movement from in-course objects, but they could of still added them because there are moving in-course objects in other courses left in, like the bridge in Delfino Plaza and the trees in Luigi's Mansion, for a short list of examples). Still, somehow this game manages to be the best version. How? I DON'T KNOW Just kidding, it's because it's portable and has wifi. `Nuf said.

I'll be willing to play any time I'm not playing Warcraft 3, but I'm only a mediocre player, maybe a little better than mediocre at the most, so don't expect THAT big of a challenge.
