I've been unimpressed with most files since... well, a long time now. Oldschool files were just stepped to whatever felt *fun*, as opposed to "well, this needs to properly layer the blahblahblahblahjargoncockblah." Files weren't dumps, either, that don't even feel like you're playing music.
It's why I enjoy 9 to 11 footers on this site a LOT more than I do FGO's, etc. When you're not stuffing arrows and retarded jack patterns in everywhere, you have to think more about what you're stepping. There's a difficulty in the simplicity, and you have to be more intelligent about it. When you pull it off, you can get some amazingly fun files. Musical choice matters, too. I feel like many files now are just stepped to... such... "blah" music choices.
