    turning off aero got rid of the lag, i didn't need to do anything crazy like uninstalling updates or running xp in a virtual machine. thanks guys!!

          But it also depends on how messed up their Windows installation is. If I don't reinstall Windows for a year I start getting lag in games I wouldn't normally get lag, however if I was running a high end i7 it would take a lot longer to get to that point. Even though disabling Aero is something to do with the OS, it's still a hardware issue because if he was running superior hardware he could play FFR with Aero enabled.

          Anyway glad you got your issue solved.
