You'll eventually reach a spread wall if you want to do the more difficult songs.
If you really want to be cool, play arrow keys or four consecutive keys (asdf, ghjk, etc.) Lets you switch from spread to index in a pinch.

You should probably learn 3-finger instead of index if you want to get really good, but index is much cooler than spread so you should stick with that

Depends on what you mean by successful, I do just fine
