I only use JL1 (Judgement Level 1) on SM for practicing, I normally use JL3 or 4.

But the timing window is easier in there.

There's your problem.

You should be practicing on JL6 or 7, getting used to being precise.

On J1-J3 yes, but J4 is what everyone who counts plays on as it is seen as what is normal. J4L4. So playing on below that is obviously going to be easier. As it is, J4 is harder than the timing window in FFR.

Also, judging yourself on CIA Rave isn't "fast". CIA Rave isn't "fast".

You may be trying to hit the arrows exactly on time (right when the arrows line up). This can lead to a lot of goods sometimes, so maybe try to hit the notes slightly earlier? Different songs are synced differently, so you just have to test each song out.

plus, there is no guarantee that a note will have before-and-after timing windows that are exactly diametrically opposite unless it's like some BPM that's a multiple of 30, right? what i mean is for some sync'd notes it will seem like the center of the sound doesn't correspond to the middle frame, so try hitting at different times i guess!

oh, and the judge isn't too tight.

Getting a perfect score in FFR is way easier than getting a perfect score in stepmania (AAAA that is; I think getting an AAA in stepmania is easier than in FFR, but that's probably just because I'm way more used to stepmania.) If the timing windows were any looser, then anyone very good would be able to AAA all of the songs that don't give avmisses, and the game would be kind of pointless.

If anything, you should be using j5-j7 for practicing, and j4 for real play.

Timing is fine where it stands.
