Rather than being forced, do what most games do. When you first sign on there's a HUGE button that says "play the tutorial" then a tiny little X somewhere to skip it. That way it's pretty obvious that you're supposed to play the tutorial if it's your first time but people just playing as a Guest in their spare time can skip it easily too...

That sounds like a nice compromise. I still would like to explore the idea of giving a reward for the completion of this tutorial (first time only of course), though. Thoughts?

        I agree with this.

I like the idea of having the tutorial be obvious in the game engine to anyone who hasn't yet completed (passed) it. And when they do, they should get a token for their efforts.

Of course, it's still a normal public song, so you could always go to the song menu to play it if you want to.

make sure to mention that the quality of the music is directly related to the difficulty of the chart (with a few exceptions)

This is a direct consequence of many active stepfilers also being arrow-smashers of some skill, I would imagine.

As someone who played the game before registering because of the whole "hey, register to save your high scores!" popup, I disagree with forcing new accounts to play the tutorial. There's a DDR machine in the basement of my student center, I get the general idea.

Perhaps something could be worked in about the 1200-file milestone covering a wide range of genres and styles?
