Back on topic, I think a sticky with a basic review of what's considered under the public domain would be great for clearing up this sometimes murky issue. It would possibly expose more people to classical music in FFR's version of a modern context...though I do think there needs to be more files with difficulty 5-8 in that genre to balance the number of FMO/FGO files in there.

UnkownMan has a point, though...you could always do a remix, like Sanxion7 did with Say It Right. Then I believe you would technically be the artist and not the person who did the original work. Of course, then the problem might become how much change has to take place before it's considered a work of your own and not a plagiarized version of the song you remixed, which is definitely a much thornier issue.

igot: TECHNICALLY.... if sanxion7 did not have permission from nelly furtado to do the remix, then the copyright holder on his remix is still her. which means, technically, we don't have permission to use it.

but, for 2nd style, we've been very lax on that. in this case, because it's such a well known song by such a well known artist, i did a little CYA and made sure to credit her in the artist field anyway.

i'm doing The Abduction from the Seraglio by Mozart and William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini and i'm getting them arranged by a veteran composer. But weren't these were like 150-200 yrs ago so how would these work ? o.O

both of those works are PD. so you need permission only from the performer, not the composer or their estate.
