12 years ago today, I was riding my bike waiting for my dad to finish mowing the lawn. I took a ride around the block; it was such a beautiful day, in fact the temperature right now is a perfect resemblance to the temperature 12 years ago. As I biked down my road I noticed I couldn't hear the lawnmower anymore, I was excited so I peddled faster, as I neared I noticed the lawnmower was just sitting on the lawn and there was someone laying next to it.
"Dad, wake up" I yelled. nothing... I started screaming for my mom who was inside, and she came running out, and called 911. The ambulance came almost 15 minutes later, and they carted away my motionless father. My sister and I were told to go to the neighbours house and wait. We waited for what seemed like an enternity when my mom came back with the news we were dreading. My father had passed away. I vividly remember her telling me that they revived him long enough to say that his final wish was for me and my sister to graduate with honors, I feel that I have accomplished that recently and that he is looking down from wherever he is, proud, that I never gave up and that I pushed through this major obstacle in my life... R.I.P <3 I love you dad! I don't usually cry, but I am in tears as I write this.

All in all, I believe this has made me a better person, because I have learned not to dwell on the past, but to use it to better yourself in the future.

Condolences bro..
I lost my dad a few years ago to alcohol.. And my moms boyfriend who practically was my dad (they had been dating for 10 years, since i was 8 years old) died 2years ago while jumping from the 10th floor. As for being a better person today? I dont know, i can agree on the part about acknowledging things in the present for sure though. |

May he continue to rest in peace man. I really am sorry to hear about that.
I know where you're coming from too, I lost my mother to cancer when I was in 3rd grade. I know how hard it is to handle and recover from, and I'm happy to see that you were able to. I'd say that while it is unfortunate, sometimes it's only events like these that make some people truly appreciate their lives and what they have. I can say that after that day I woke up and realized just how stupid I was, and since then have done everything in my power to improve. I think I have. Again, I really am sorry. |

Losing someone is always really tough and it sets you back pretty hard emotionally/financially/etc. It certainly requires you to be strong in order to climb back out of the hole, and it's something not a lot of people will understand since most people lose their parents later on in life.
EDIT: Lost my father in 2004 (8 years ago or so), although it may as well have been my mother, too, as we haven't really spoken much since then. |
