Laptop/keyboard suggestions please
Okay well for the last 6 months I have been using a vista computer to play ffr, it was around the time of the Av miss fix that i started using it. I soon realized that vista blows. hard. so i've been working hard and saved up money to buy a new computer in the hopes of being able to play at my fullest again.
What i need help on are: 1.What type of laptop should i get that works well with ffr? Price range= 1200-1700 USD (Please suggest laptops you have atleast used so you know if it works well) 2.Should I get a Usb keyboard for the laptop I want to purchase? I've heard USB keyboards dont work so well for ffr but I don't know if playing on the laptop's keyboard is any better. Any suggestions would be great =) i really want to start playing ffr competitivly again Thank you |

Well, I use a Windows 2000 for SM that works fine. The thing you should make sure to do is DEFINITLY get a key board. All the hitting of the keys will destroy your lap tops key board. You can get them cheap, or just buy a cheap computer. Honestly, a PC is cheaper than a lap top.
Either way, if you don't just get a computer definitly get a good key board. I use a Dell SK 8115. It's good. Hope everything works well for you |

It's a Gateway W340UA. Mine is running windows XP Media center addition. The keys are very flat and respond very quickly, if anything the keys are more suited for FFR than the puffy desktop keys. Also the notebook is very compact and small. If your looking to take it anywhere you can only expect about a few hours before the battery dies. When playing at home I would recommend to have it plugged into a charger at all times. Some pictures of mine. |

Re: Laptop/keyboard suggestions please
Oh and it's not Vista's fault entirely, you just need a good rig to run Vista well because it's very process intensive. Btw I'm not a Windows fan-boy or anything as I'm currently spending all my time getting DX to work on my new PC with Unbuntu, going to see if RedHat works too as I'm too cheap to buy an OS.
I currently play FFR on my laptops keyboard but I when I play at school I do a lot better on actual keyboards. I would suggest buying a USB keyboard if you're going to be playing FFR...just don't buy a cheap one as that's what I did and again, too cheap to buy a good keyboard. I would say for a laptop go Dell as they have a good warranty and I'm pretty certain I could drop this down a flight of stairs and it wouldn't break. Btw holy **** that laptop looks so similar to my laptop. Keyboard is even the EXACT same except for that one key between right Alt and Ctrl. Last edited by fido123; 07-25-2008 at 03:38 PM.. |

Re: Laptop/keyboard suggestions please
I have a Dell D630 laptop that I purchased for college, my student discount got it down from $2000 to $1500. It's really good for FFR/SM... except sometimes the KB will randomly drop keystrokes. Which is incredibly annoying, since the responsiveness of the keys is really good and the screen is nice and clear... especially for FFR when one miss can completely ruin your score.
Also, don't use an USB keyboard. They lag horribly, my brother had one for his laptop and there was literally a .2 second delay between keytap and actual registered hit. It was a good quality keyboard too (razer tarantula), I guess laptops just don't agree with USB very well for that purpose. |

I play alot on my mac book pro it responds very well but the keys are so thin you don't get the same feel, it seems to hurt my wrist alot more.

Dude, tell me about it. I was looking around for some emulators, and I couldn't find ANYTHING. It was kind of gay, and also, macs dont come with windows office on it so you gotta buy that which is kinda gay, but w/e. EDIT: sorry, long ass post, but yeah, I like the feel of the macbook keys much more than the chunky feel of, say, a dell keyboard. I feel like those keys "slow me down." I don't know, it's hard to explain, but you get on these thin keys and it seems like the response is faster and they feel much better IMO. Last edited by makdaddy; 07-25-2008 at 11:00 PM.. |
