Tolstoy is untouchable. Dostoevsky is a distant second.

Margaret Mitchell wrote my favorite book, and John Gribbin was the best at accomplishing his purpose, but I think my favorite author would be Emily Bronte.

William Faulkner by far - his stuff is absolutely amazing. I could read his works forever

Shakespeare comes in second, with Albert Camus, Hermann Hesse, and Charles Dickens tied for third.

I so agree, though I don't think Dostoevsky is so far behind.

Charles Dickens is way too dry in my opinion.

Edgar Allen Poe for poet, his short stories and poems are always interesting to read.
As for author DJ MacHale I find to be a great one. I'm a kid so his Pendragon series is always a good way to escape on an adventure with Bobby.

I spent an interesting series of winter nights reading Edgar Allen Poe's entire collection of short stories and poems out loud with my older brother. *huggles book* He'll always be one of my favorites.

Tolstoy can tell you what it's like to die. He can tell you what it's like to lead armies. He can tell you what's going on in the mind of a murderer. He can accurately describe how childish love can tear you apart. Most importantly, he can tell you the meaning of life (he actually gives two - one in War & Peace, and the other in Anna Karenina). He's actually experienced none of these (well, one, but I don't count death since he couldn't really write about it after he died).

Dostoevsky almost makes it on the murderer one in Brothers Karamazov, but not on the level of Tolstoy.

As far as I'm concerned, every single other person to ever lift a pen is tied for third.

EDIT: I take it back, that's mean. Shakespeare, Dickens, Faulkner, Vonnegut, etc are all better writers than, say, me.

The quality of writing is not only in what is told but how it is told.

Ray Bradbury. The Martian Chronicles is the craziest thing I've ever read. Favorite poet would be William Carlos Williams or Langston Hughes.
