Someone explained why earlier in the thread. Apparently, Mace Windu force crushed General Grievous's lungs.

A concept you seem to be missing: General Grievous is NOT a robot. He's simply comprised mostly of synthetic parts.

PS The theatres are still playing it? I have it on VHS already.

...but he was "breathing" in space when that cockpit window broke on that ship.

I don't see why he's coughing if he doesn't need to breathe air.

I'm sure George Lucas and his crew weren't that meticulous or anal(for the lack of a better word) about petty details such as this.

To elaborate on this, take a look at every explosion of a death star or space station or space ship in all of Star Wars. You'll find that there are sound effects made for such explosions. However, anyone with a brain could tell you that space is a vacuum and there can be no sound in a vacuum. Geeks don't seem to care though, and it appears that they prefer awesome explosions to realism.
