The Blu-ray player plays high-definition movies, and the Blu-ray discs hold more data than the standard DVD. Without a fair-sized high definition TV, the blu-ray's higher resolution content is pointless. But, if you have a good HDTV, HD discs are a lot more vivid and crisp and put out a clearer picture. You'll definitely notice that if you go and look at HDTV's in an electronics outlet.

More so than DVDs are, of course, but it was almost exactly the same price now as DVDs were eight years ago, and that was just a couple years into the DVD's mainstream life-cycle. For the moment, at least, Afrobean's predictions have proven quite right. The attachment to physical formats continues to prevail, and might just do so through the Blu-ray's life cycle. Just as he also predicted, slowdowns in digital distribution mainly involve internet connection speeds. However, there are companies aside from comcast looking at providing 60mbps download speeds soon, and without a download cap, so I think sooner or later digital distribution will prevail. I'd be surprised if there were a major disc format beyond Blu-ray that were to be successful.

Incidentally, I feel I must point out that downloads will never be able to supplant physical media in movies for the same reason that downloads have not supplanted ANY OTHER medium. They still print books, they still issue games on discs, they still produce CDs, they still print newspapers. DVD/Blu-ray will be around until another physical format overtakes them; they will not be defeated by an intangible medium.

I was trying to simplify the answer (I've worked in retail, so I'm used to making it easy for almost everybody to understand), so I'm not sure what you meant by "better". I didn't want to include specifics, and I didn't realize it was a competition either.

I respect your opinion, as it's proven just as likely. I personally am into science fiction (especially cyberpunk) and all sorts of technology, and I see everything getting computerized eventually. How soon that will happen depends on the mass ability to adapt new technology. Sooner or later I can see physical formats becoming something almost a fashion statement, kind of like vinyl records. I hardly think they will disappear, but tell me how many times you check a paper dictionary or do complicated math on paper when you can use a computer? It might seem like these tasks are nothing near reading or movie watching, but sooner or later both of those things might be treated the same way.
