Etienne has a good video on improving in another game called 'Etterna', but the same principles can pretty much be applied to any 4-key rhythm game such as FFR. Here is the video:

However, one thing is that this video is a bit more advanced so it might seem a bit overwhelming at first-- but your own pace is fine. Feel free to return to it whenever you feel more comfortable over time

From my own experience, these are the three main things I needed to do in order to get better (some of which are also mentioned in the video)
1) Play a lot
2) Be willing to expand outside of your comfort-zone, but not so much that it isn't playable for you
3) Also be willing to make mistakes and be patient with yourself. Progress will happen over time

When initially starting, the hardest thing is probably pattern recognition and reading. Try spending time playing lower-difficulty files until you feel comfortable seeing and hitting the proper notes, and build your way up from there. The two main things you need in order to develop skill are pattern recognition and muscle memory. Don't be discouraged either if progress feels hard, you can do it!

I would also try to find a layout you feel comfortable with. Generally, players gravitate towards a "Spread" layout rather than using the arrow keys. So a spread layout might look something like this:
- Left: A
- Down: S
- Up: K
- Right: L

Last thing I think is important to mention-- learning where to look and keep your eyes is imperative to being able to read the arrows. New players may often develop a bad habit of moving their eyes to each individual note that comes up, but as you get better at playing, your eyes will generally be pretty stationary. Just try and find what is comfortable for you.

Play, ALOT. Don't expect to get better only playing for 30 minutes once a week.
Tweak your settings often to promote change and trick your brain.
Play songs out of your comfort zone, but try not to mash(spamming the keys pointlessly)
Go for aaa's as this will help your accuracy. I played with the "amazing" accuracy off for years but once i turned it on my accuracy got alot better, this could work for others as well.
Dont expect to get good in a week, unless you have other rhythm game experience.
Experiment with different key mapping to see what feels the best to you. I use xc m, because its at the bottom of the keyboard and feels better for my hands but i used to play something like as kl a long time ago.
Thats about it really. The more you play and familiarize yourself with the different patterns the better off you will be.

honestly, just enjoy the game and have fun. you'll get better over time, but why even get better if you're not having fun playing the game.

play a alot, have fun, find songs that make you feel good and find files that tapping to the beat feels good. "not all charts are created equal" and this fun thing called "favorites" exists and adds a little pink marker on favorite songs, i like to play these alot to mark my progress. i also like to use certain songs that use alot of specific patterns for progress marking too.

Go to settings, enable Legacy Files, then play the file "Story of Snowman and Sunshine Girl" 1,000 times all the way through consecutively.

Try to play at least a little bit every day, even if it's just a couple songs, because skill rusting is real. And conversely, when you play every day, you'll have better improvement than if you played all those songs at once in one long session.

Pay attention to ergonomics. Don't play with your wrists bent or twisted to the side, try to find a setup that lets you keep your wrists as straight as possible while you're playing (I rest my arms on books so my hands are elevated a little bit above the keyboard). And to make your keystrokes a little more clean, fast, and precise, try to keep your fingers in a position where they're pressing directly down on the keys, not at an angle.

Play songs that you really enjoy listening to, even if they're way out of your skill range. I've measured my progress in terms of being able to complete songs that were at one point impossible for me, simply because I enjoyed hearing them

Adjust your keyboard/chair/monitor height so the whole system is comfortable. Stretch your hands and forearms while playing, drink water.
