Unhappy If you know FL Studio, HELP!!!

Ok so I'm having some problems with FL Studio 8. The audio buffer is screwing with me pretty bad. If it's too low it'll make scratchy noises and ruin the sound, eventually resulting in skipping if I play too much. But if it is up high it just skips alot and everything runs really slow. The main problem is the skipping becuase I have no idea how to fix it. It does this when at least 3 advanced melodies play at once, otherwise it works slow but fine. Please help me out here because I can't remix Sandstorm without fixing this.

Your computer doesn't have enough memory for it. My computer does it too, except it's not unusual for me to use 10 synths at one time. I just work through it.

And uh.. it's up to you what you want to do, but I wouldn't remix Sandstorm. Beginner remixes of songs like those are what gives FL Studio a bad reputation as a DAW.

lol good one

But yeah, your computer is just a bit too slow to have however many instruments you have loaded. My suggestion: get more RAM. RAM is the easiest and cheapest method to speeding up your computer. My old laptop had your problem until I doubled its ram from 512 to 1GB.

My computer has 1GB and it still hits 92-99% memory usage on a regular basis, I can't even imagine running off of 512

get a dual core processor and like 4 gb of a ram and it'll fix your problem completely

I rarely ever hear popping unless I'm running like 40 different vsts or something ridiculous like that

I had that problem when I used FL. I just kept my buffer slider in the middle, and it worked pretty well, until I had up to about 40 different tracks at once. 2g of RAM i'd say is pretty comfortable for making meaty music.

And I have to agree with Cyanite - FL8, while I dont use it anymore, is a good DAW, but definitely stay away from remixing songs like Sandstorm.

Did you switch to ASIO4ALL from Direct Sound (Primary Sound Driver or something like that) in the audio options?

I thought you couldn't use FL unless you use ASIO, so I just assumed, but yeah, definitely check on that. It's especially vital if you're using the stock sound card on your computer.

Im almost certain having dual core processors wouldn't effect how FL studio is run. Fl studio only uses 1 processor unless they run the graphics section and the music section on seperate processors, which i doubt is true.

Try the normal stuff like updating your sound drivers and checking if ASIO is selected because FL Studio doesn't work as well under any others.

If that doesn't work buy some RAM, its super cheap now for 2-4 Gigs

flstudio didn't support dual core until fl9 came out a few weeks ago here's the feature list

Quote:
Sidechaining - The FL Studio Mixer 'Track Send' now has an
additional 'Sidechain' mode to support multiple-input mixer plugins.

Multi-core CPU (Hyperthreading) - Improved multithreaded generator & added multithreaded effects processing.

Multiple controllers. You can now control multiple independent instrument channels, assigned by MIDI number.

New volatile linking feature.

Wrapper - Aligned tick lengths checkbox for greater plugin compatibility.

Revised Playlist

Playlist track naming & icon - ( Tools for better song organization ) plus playlist track mute controls and more.

New plugins:

Ogun: synthesizer specialized in metallic timbres.
Gross Beat: beat rearranger effect.
New Autogun synthesizer based on Ogun.

Sakura:
Vocodex: vocoder effect.

Maximus:
Heavy weaponry for the loudness war

Maximus will deliver transparent peak limiting and volume maximization without coloration of the processed sound. However, Maximus is much more than a pristine quality Mastering Maximizer, it's also a Compressor, Limiter, Noise Gate, Expander, Ducker and De-esser. Maximus excels equally well as
a final mastering plugin or as a per-track effect. Lock and load.

Implemented & removed:

Right-clicking playlist items no longer deletes them.

You can now middle-click the working area to pan plugin windows ( ONLY plugins, as it's designed for oversized VST's ).
fl9 is actually lighter on cpu usage too you might want to try upgrading and see if that fixes your problem

Some generators use multithreading in FL that would benefit from dual core, even more and effects too now in FL9.

EDIT: Beat me to the punch

I had this problem and it was because of lack of RAM. The kind of lag you would get due to your processor would be different I would assume. All I remember is I turned down some cache or something and it fixed it perfectly, however I'm running 2GB of RAM.

hey man -- you just need a better, or faster computer. or decrease some shared ram with video mem into sound driver space. really, the limitation here is your computer, not FL.

I have had that problem with a lot of softwares. I had to update my hard drive to a faster one, and get more RAM. Then I also played with the buffer. I agree with alot of what everyone has posted. Especially checking the settings of your sound card. if you have a stock sound card you might want to upgrade to a better one. M-Audio/Digidesign has the Delta Series for pretty cheap. One thing that has been true for me is that the more complicated my music, the more complicated computer I have had to run to make it work.
Check out some FL tutorials online for free. I also know this guy at www.beatclass.com who makes really good tutorials and knows alot about FL Studio. He might have really good info.
Here is a tutorial that we did, it doesn't really address your problem, but I am posting the link anyway because it is one of our producers making a beat in FL Studio 9.
Good Luck
