Actually that doesn't equal 1. .9999... (repeating) does though.

.9999999999999 = .9999999999999 :P

Read my posts. There is no difference. There is no 1 at the end. It's infinately many 0s, which as jimerax said, is equal to 0.

aleco, sorta, but you have to realize there's an infinite number of zeroes in front of that 1, so basically that number is so small that you might as well forget that 1 is even there and just call the darn thing 0.

jimerax, like I said before, you could never ever prove that an infinitely small number is equal to zero.

makaveli, that explanation sucks
A number divided by itself can never equal anything other than 1, so you cannot say that 9/9 = .999 repeating

Unless .999 repeating = 1

And there is no 1 at the end of the infinite zeros.. there is no end. :P

It needs a definition to prove this.
And this is a definition of limitation, so no more proof is necessary.

For all cases we assume .999 is .999 repeating

x = .999
10x = 9.999 repeating

10x - x = 9x
and
9.999 - .999 = 9
9 = 9x
1 = x

This shoulda been at the beginning

uh, limits are different. Limits say "this function approaches this number at this point". There's really no actual equality in a limit, when you use an equals sign when solving a limit problem, you're saying "the limit equals this".
