Warner Bros and Dreamworks taking on Anime titles!
Guess what guys?
Warner Bros is taking up Akira with Leonardo DiCaprio but it takes place in New Manhattan.....wtf? release in 2009 ish on the other hand, Dreamworks is taking up Ghost in the Shell!!! but takes place in China not future Japan..... x.X lets just hope they both follow the original story line If you have any doubts about this just use Google [Edit] I my self is for GITS. The movie was originally planned to be live action, i believe.. GITS takes place all over the world not just in Japan. Also Steven Spielberg making it(he stated that he liked it)....It can't be that bad... lol Last edited by koreanmatt; 04-30-2008 at 03:23 PM.. |

What the hell, ahahahaha.
Oh man... I thought this was a joke, but it's true. I don't know of whether to be impressed or disgusted. |

Definitely disgusted. You can't "transplant" a storyline (having GitS take place in China instead of Japan, for example) and expect it to be just as good as the original.

*sigh*. the last thing this country needs is for Anime to become mainstream... we don't need more crazy teenagers running around in Naruto garb or cat outfits.

I must agree with tass on this one. These companies are just a tad late...

The opening week ticket sales will be directly proportional to the amount of weeaboos there are.
The movies will also both be in IMDB's 100 worst movies of all time. |

Pfft, nothing is going to supplant "Plan 9 from Outer Space" and "Manos: The hands of Fate"

The outcome will definitely be horrible, no doubt about it.
It's fine if they take on North American cartoon shows however anime just won't work with this idea.

They already announced they were going to make it 'family' viewable. They're probably going to ruin anything they try to do.

Re: Warner Bros and Dreamworks taking on Anime titles!
I don't think it's a terrible idea. In fact, in my time watching Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, I considered what it would be like for there to be a live action film along the same vein, and I decided it would be a great idea in theory. Never had considered Akira though to be honest.
As far as following the original story: as far as I'm concerned, Ghost in the Shell could be a totally original story simply based on the concept of the anime/manga, because the anime alone has branched off far from the manga already with original stories. To be honest, I'm not that familiar with Akira (shock!), but this film is stated to be based off of the manga directly, so I'm going to go out on a limb and give them the benefit of the doubt on reasonably maintaining source plot points. And the setting being different: totally irrelevant. The specifics don't matter, all that does is matching the mood of the source material. If they want to set it in "New Manhattan" instead of Tokyo, it doesn't matter, as long as this "New Manhattan" is a similar post apocalyptic urban setting. And as for the China for GitS, who is to say it's not an original story that has Section 9 going over to China for some reason? And even fi it's not, who cares? Stop being a damn weeaboo and you'll realize that other locations can work for stories just as well as the one you beat off to nightly. ps i did a tiny bit of research on this: Leonardo DiCaprio will be PRODUCING Akira, they haven't made any official comments about the cast yet. GitS is also identified as being based off of the manga directly. So don't go immediately bitching to these film companies if things are different than you expect; a lot of the time, the anime has tons of differences from the source manga. pps Quote:

Seriously, I would like to see the finished product before judging it. Also, I don't see why you weaboos always think that American films will be bad. >__> Just stfu, you don't know how it's going to turn out.
Also, making anime mainstream would be pretty cool imo. Also... I don't get where that Naruto comment came out from... that's COMPLETELY irrelevant to what the topic is about. I'd like to see a bigger community of anime lovers in my city rather than god damn hicks who crank hip-hop in their cars and think they're "gangster". |

Agree with Nyokou. If anime supplanted rap/hip hop/gangster as mainstream culture, I would be very happy.
Even though the "anime culture" would probably suck, it would be better than what we have now. |

Expect many Live-action anime movies in the following years.
The other day I came across a Dragon Ball movie poster... *gulp* |

Something tells me this is nothing but a cheap cash plan in to prey off the wallets of Weeabos.

Not like it matters. It's just a poster with some lightning and a Dragonball. Anyway, I doubt if there will be much more anime based films if Speed Racer and Dragonball do poorly. It's not like we're going to be looking towards a 2010 release of Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie starring Dylan and Cole Sprouse, or Trigun starring Johnny Yong Bosch. Actually, ****ing A, I would totally pay to see those. The surreality of it would totally make up for the potential blasphemy.

Re: Warner Bros and Dreamworks taking on Anime titles!
I disagree with most of you in here. I think most of the weeaboos will stay away. I think if you tell most anime fans this they will be appalled.
The majority of people seeing these films will be you guys who have never seen GitS or Akira. I will always judge these films next to the Original. Same with films from books or cartoons or whatever. The original is always my expectation, I don't care if it's an "adaptation", if it doesn't come up to the level then it's failed in my eyes.

Re: Warner Bros and Dreamworks taking on Anime titles!
I really don't think they can capture anime in a live-action movie.....why would you want to make an anime show into a movie anyway? They're very boring.
