The Human Eye: Colors we will FINALLY see?!
An interesting area in the magazine Popular Science mentions the possibility of people seeing colors that we can't see... normally .
Underneath the human eye, there are three types of cone cells. One type can detect red, the other green, and the third blue. Although there have been reports of people born with four types of cone cells, they have not been verified as far as I know. However, scientists are trying to come up with ideas for humans to see more colors with four or even more types of cone cells, using, of course, technology and surgery. I don't remember which issue that was from, so don't ask . Gosh, that would be cool if we can see some colors in which only some animals can see. On the other hand, it could permanently damage the human's original way of seeing things . What do you think? |

Wow, such claims haven't been verified and you can't even prove the article exists? This thread'll take off with how much we have to talk about here. ::rolls eyes::
Critical Thinking is not about "wow, that would be cool if..." sort of threads, so I'm moving this. Next time, do some research. You're on the internet; a little search would be bound to turn up something you could use here if what you claim is actually true. --Guido http://andy.mikee385.com |

sounds pretty cool, wouldn't be half-bad to have 4 or more from my perspective.

Re: The Human Eye: Colors we will FINALLY see?!
Im not sure how creditable this will be as a human mutation, but as a technological invention... Just maybe. Weve plenty of contraptions that lend us the ability to see infrared, UV, etc...but lets say hypothetically in the not so distance future, with the combination of cybernetics all we have to do is think, and we can see infrared? I watched a clip not too long ago about an individual implanting in his brain a chip that would allow him to draw circles with a mouse cursor, just by thinking. Predator eat your heart out!

I hate to refer every thing I talk about to a game, but does anyone here remember the MGS3 Snake Eater story? same concept: what starts out as a step for mankind ends up killing it. |

Keep in mind that eye surgery can make you go blind. Though it's getting safer and depends very much on the skill and knowledge of the doctor performing the operation, I'm not sure I want the chance of going blind simply to see another color. I can take acid for that.

Re: The Human Eye: Colors we will FINALLY see?!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrachromat Reading it now
Edit 1: "Tetrachromacy has not yet been discovered in any mammals, though it is likely that it occurs in some birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, arachnids and insects" Edit 2: "It has been suggested that women who are carriers for variant cone pigments may be born as full tetrachromats, having four different simultaneously functioning kinds of cones to pick up different colors.[1] One study suggested that 2-3% of the world's women may have the kind of fourth cone that lies between the standard red and green cones, giving, theoretically, a significant increase in colour differentiation. [1] Although further studies will need to be conducted to verify tetrachromacy in humans"

To insert the cones they would need a very powerful microscope and be able to put them on the retina. This is highly unpractical in my opinion.
