Re: End Of The World Wednesday?
Dont know if anyone has said this yet, but if this supercollider does kill us all, it will be by creating a Black Hole.
Therefore, it will take up to 4 years to DESTROY US ALL. (p.s the chances if it making a black hole are in the .00000001 range, by the way) |

Re: End Of The World Wednesday?
Anyone who says that this will destroy us all because "them scientists be making black holes" needs to go read some physics books. Honestly, a lot of them don't even have much math in them.

Keep in mind any potential black holes will dissolve before they suck up so much as a rat

Re: End Of The World Wednesday?
A lot of fuss about this over nothing.
There's nothing to worry about. Of course the world isn't going to end. Mini black holes? IF, and it's a fairly big if, the LHC created mini blacks holes, they would be so insignificant the equivalent energy wouldn't light up a light bulb. It's also going to decay in a time period most of us would consider instantaneous. Also, people are unaware of this, but the Earth is being absolutely blasted, constantly, by particles from space that are exponentially more energetic than this. The energies associated with this machine are actually laughable in comparison to what happens naturally all the time, and has no real negative effects on us. Really, if we had anything to fear from this machine, the world would have been gone a long time ago. edit: the LHC is only circulating a beam around the track tomorrow. The first collision won't be until the 21st of October, so all of the suckers out there have a bit more time left!

Well, it's Wednesday in Geneva.
Btw, I'm pretty sure they've done these experiments before. I don't think anything bad is going to happen.

Re: End Of The World Wednesday?
How can people predict a black hole will occur if they know more about pickles? ._.
I've always been interested in black holes, something that caught my attention. I've never really learned much about one, because we have no idea what they look like (since they absorb light apparently) and because they don't obey to the laws of physics we know. So how can we suppose there is a 0.000000001% or however little chance one will occur, since we know so little about them? Before the curse of statistics fell upon mankind we lived a happy, innocent life, full of merriment and go and informed by fairly good judgement. - Hilaire Belloc Statistics are abstract. How can we base opinions on them? |

Re: End Of The World Wednesday?
yeah if I recall correctly a black hole only occurs very rarely when a large star explodes. Not when scientests play with toys

Re: End Of The World Wednesday?
You know, I don't know too much about this stuff, so this may seem like a dumb question. I am wondering if, although I'm sure it would be really expensive, something like this could be used as a weapon. Maybe something like this that doesn't loop around, but rather sends the beam at a designated location. It sounds powerful enough, but is it a possibility?
