Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
There is a problem with this in my eyes. It may become an elitist chatroom, only in real time. IRC's have been just as split as communities due to positions of power. The only thing I'd suggest is to have only one admin/op of the chat. Either that or none, if possible. Once there's one, there's two. Once there's two, it becomes elitist shortly.

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Whenever this happens I'd like to be notified so I can hopefully help out with pad files.

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
I want to help. I have been playing FFR/SM since 04 (see the account "tomjoe") and I feel as if I could help, and right now the SM fanbase is spread out over thousands of different sites based on a bunch of rhythm games.

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
....the last few pages are TL/DR sorry I'm short on time but I do have something to toss out there for the rating system
may I suggest: 1) Rate the songs 1-100 as a base. NPS-Fudge Factor seems good to me 2) make it a point to only rate from 5-90. Make the hardest thing you know 90 and the most boring a 5. 3) Try and only use every other 5 as a rating first. ie 10-15-20-25-30-35. After people play the files alot, slightly adjust them. If Song X is slighly easier then Song Y and they are both 65, lower X to 62. Make the diffirence between 61-64 really small. Also, if you leave 91-100 alone (Or better yet, go only to 85) Then you can stall the need to readjust files later on. Anyway just my two cents. Also sorry I cant use real files as examples since I no longer play real SM anymore. If anything really awesome happens with this project please PM me XD I do want to see this happen but I just dont have time to help. After this gets off the ground tho I'll be happy to write a "Class" or two about something simple like syncing or making the .dwi/.sm files. Last edited by MixMasterLar; 05-8-2011 at 08:39 PM.. Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Good news, everyone!
The works on making this new community has started for real. Me, Staiain and the SSC dev team are redesigning the forums on stepmania.com, since the site will be our new home. Subsections for simfile packs are open, and many others will be opened as well. Please, take a look at there and help us. |

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Yup, stepmania.com. I think it fits quite well, beucase the site is huge, but only has guests browsing their forums. Besides, I think the SSC dev team supports the idea of making the forums more "user-friendly", so I see no problem. :/

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Makes sense, since people looking for a website about Stepmania will probably try "stepmania.com" first.

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
I'm okay with it because one of the admins or something used to have a Reimu avatar. Dunno if he still has it though.

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Wow, this project looks intense! And, I find it really exciting.
However, I also have a lot of questions. First, when rating the difficulty of songs the first post game a standard for 100 but what about a 1, would a 1 be a Konami beginner difficulty song? I feel that this needs to be elaborated on. MY next question is, would the community re-release all of the packs with the new difficulty system, or would it simply be up to the player to change the rating on their own? I personally think re-releasing would be the better option also recording the average difficulty for every song in the pack. This would make choosing a pack much easier for newer players. New paragraph to make my post easier to read, sue me. And with a new paragraph a new question: the default Stepmania theme(I use 3.9) does not show difficulties above 12 very well, would we be creating a new theme to go with our new system? A new theme could alienate several users who are looking for a more plug and play experience. However, since we, or rather the people who started this endeavor, are talking to the folks at stepmania.com there is a possibility of having out theme integrated with the default theme. This leads me to another Idea, if we are still using the difficulty setting that determines feet I could see either way to many things being shoe horned at 1 or stuff going above 10 that were previously around 7. A newer player who was familiar with DDR might not want to play anything above 10 feet. So I think it would be easier if our system was separate from the feet but our theme would exclusively use our setting without ruining the sims for players who don't have our theme. Even tho I just made an argument using them as examples, would this system extend out to the official Konami sims? If not by the time someone responds to this post I will have lost a lot of time because I'm going to go play them, that is if it is alright for me to join in on this project? My reason for wanting to do this is because in a way I agree with what MizMasterLar said that if we go all the way to 100 now someone is going to come out with a 101. Because, since there is no limit on how fast the song can go there is no limit on how many notes can be put inside a single second, and therefore no limit on how hard a song can be. However, past a certain point the song is impossible. I think that by building our way up in difficulty we can get more respectable ratings. Also I think that if we start with only a baseline of 100 there will be a large gap in difficulty between the 30 to 50 range. So now, I'm going to go try to come up with a base line for 1. And, just because I love the sound of my typing. I'm going to proceed along the path of finding the baseline 1 difficulty while assuming a song must be fail-able, on a life difficulty of 4, to receive a rating of 1. I will consider any song that cannot be failed to have no difficulty. |
