Re: Swearing
Swearing is so habitual for me that it makes me sound like I'm too uneducated to be able to use other words. I'm refraining from using the F word as often as I'm able to catch myself which isn't as frequent as I'd like.

Re: Swearing
Why should people want their swearing to make a great impact on other people?

In my context, I am implying the use of constant, repetitive cursing... Not cursing in general. That would be also a response to the OP. |

Re: Swearing
Swearing is actually incredibly cool. I'm a language nerd, so it's not that I don't know a hundred other words that mean basically the same thing, it's that of those hundred, none of them mean exactly the same thing. The demonization of certain words is really interesting, because it gives them the special status of having no synonyms.
Think about it. Literally, poop and shit have the same meaning, but saying one in a moment of particular passion is infinitely more satisfying than the other. That's why swearing is cool, because it has an added meaning that isn't listed in the dictionary, a meaning that is more significant than the actual definition of the word. What's cool is that these words have somehow developed this meaning, and a common use that doesn't follow any of our accepted grammatical rules at all. ****ing cool words |

They might use a verb as a noun that wasn't meant to be used as a noun, or something of that sort. It's not the use of the word, but the action of abusing it. |

Re: Swearing
That's what's so goddamn cool about them. The common, accepted usage has absolutely nothing to do with the type of word it is. You can bitch and moan about "abuse" this and "obsessively use" that, but who defines what abuse of a word is? Who's to say what overuse of a word is? It's just language developing. It's what separates english from latin.

Re: Swearing
Also calling someone something they are isn't judgmental. It's the truth. Forming an opinion immediately of that person's intelligence based upon their speech is, though.
Do I really have to do this to you or are you going to give up now? |

Re: Swearing
I think that this is an issue of what each one of us were raised with.
If your parents never cursed and discouraged it, that can change a point of view, etc. Shouldn't really be a surprise, though. |

Re: Swearing
Who says that swearing has to be used sparingly to make it effective? Why would I use them sparingly if I don't care about the effect it has on the words' impact? Swear words are just words. Yeah they can be over-used as any word can which I find more annoying than anything else, but if I'm not trying to make a point or have an impact with what I'm saying then what does it matter if I use them regularly?
