Re: Super Smash Brothers Brawl
After watching that video, I think the best solution is to not get hit by one of those final smashes.
Most of them look like once you're hit you're done.

Or what I more or less mean is you only get good at about 40% of the game by the looks of all the things that get taken out and banned.

Re: Super Smash Brothers Brawl
As for wavedashing and basically all "advanced" glitchy exploits: I hope they're gone from Brawl and I'll be glad if they are.
I'm one of those people Squeek mentioned much earlier who completely stopped playing MKDS online because of snaking. Snaking is terrible and I hate it in every way. I tried learning it but stopped because it's not even slightly fun to execute. It takes a fun game and makes it stop being fun to play for the sake of gaining some extra speed. Yuck. That being said, it's great to play with my friends--it's pretty much the only DS game we play together--but if anyone started snaking I'd tell them to ****ing stop or I wouldn't play with them anymore. Having depth in gameplay is fine. IMO, one of the reasons Guitar Hero succeeds as a competitive game is squeezing; IMO squeezing is an example of a very "fair" advanced technique. It barely makes any difference at all for the most part, only affects anything if both players FC the song, and won't cause better players to completely own everyone who doesn't know how to do it all the time. Getting outsqueezed does not cease to make the game fun, especially since it's not likely to happen over and over--just pick a really hard song next game and you won't have to worry about it. If a player is a lot better than you it won't be attributed to squeezing--it'll be attributed to the fact that they can, say, five-star Raining Blood and you can barely pass it. Which, might I add, is a totally intuitive skill gap not born of glitchy/exploity techniques. Things like wavedashing and snaking give such a large advantage that they really cannot be made up for for the most part, which is why I detest their existence. I feel as though an "advanced technique" is only "fair" if it determines skill only among the competitive players; if it can, by itself, turn a lesser player into a much better player simply by learning it (as I know snaking can, and maybe wavedashing), I consider it a bad idea for the game to have it. I'm also fine with advanced techniques that are intuitive. For example, memorizing all the hotkeys for everything in Starcraft...of course every competitive player has done this, and of course it helps a good bit in making you better, but it's also pretty obvious and not a glitch or exploit, so you won't really see anyone complaining about it. Unlike snaking/wavedashing, it's an obvious skill, not one born of exploits. In the end, I'm okay with an "advanced technique" if my reaction to it is "wow, that guy's really good" or I don't even notice it, and I'm not okay with it if my reaction to it is "what the **** is that guy doing and why is he kicking my ass so badly...?"

Re: Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Not if you're playing with 3 other people. Shoving everyone off the ends of the levels could make quite a scramble for the ledge.

I'm going to a Brawl tournament next weekend. One of my friends modded his Wii and order Japanese Brawl. We're going to all record matches!

good videos of 2v2s and 1v1s. Lets you get a feel of the abilities of some characters. As for the competitive argument. All I know is the competitive settings will be set by the competitive community to be the most balanced and skillful settings. So in the end it doesn't really matter because I get to play the style I love =] |

Re: Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Going to look at and respond to posts in a bit. In the mean time, enjoy the Brawl tournament videos posted on this guy's channel:
http://www.youtube.com/profile_video...yourtournament There are some really good ones there. EDIT: On second thought, seeing as how this thread seems to finally be going away from the competitive v casual flame fest that it was, I'll refrain from continuing it unless it starts back up again.
