Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
I find that most music I listen too I don't listen to the lyrics. I don't know why, I just fade them off too background noise and listen to the music portion, which is why I prefer instrumentals; more effort is put into the music portion and it sounds better to me. Any input?

Re: Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
the lyrics add a whole dimension to the songs. there are some bands and artist where the lyrics actually dont really matter though(trance music)

The music I listen to rarely has lyrics, but when it does, I listen to them

Re: Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
Most of the music I listen to, some people think has no meaning because of the way it is performed(referring to growling, screaming, that shit). I will admit, there are complete shit metal bands, but there are some that should be masters of the universe, they're so talented and the musicianship is perfect. But then again I'm more driven towards instrumentals than music with words. Using just the instruments is a powerful and really neat way of expression, and that's pretty cool

In genres where it is a prominent element (such as Nerdcore), I listen and try to evaluate the lyrics.
Otherwise, for a broad spectrum of electronica music I fade the usually generic lyrics out and concentrate on the instrumental. |

Yeah, instrumentals are usually the part of a song that strike me most strongly. Hence, most mainstream stuff tends to be a turnoff for me.
Of course, I can't help but try to pick up words if it's in another language, no matter how distasteful the song.

Sometimes, lyrics are what can make a song memorable. I usually listen to them, but some songs it's better to just ignore them.

Re: Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
I typical enjoy music more when its more about the instruments and the lyrics are there just for pretty voices. I really can't stand English lyrics because whenever I listen to them I find them incredibly corny and it makes me hate the song.

Re: Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
Generally the only effort i put forth as far as lyrics are concerned is to give me something to follow when it's a singer i like. For instance, if i'm listening to Tool chances are i know every word to every song, but likely i don't give two shits about the meaning. That being said, if it's either a ridiculously sexy song like Digital Bath by Deftones, or strikes something within me, like Procession by VNV Nation, the lyrics are more than a simple means to have something to do and become a minor clarification of a definition I've held for myself for years, so i take them to heart.
Instrumentals tend to hit me much more powerfully than anything with lyrics though. And oddly enough, the more discordant it is, the more i like it, generally. I find Behold... The Arctopus to be one of my favorite bands even though most people who hear them discount them for noise. If it's someone like Russian Circles the impact is generally as intended, i just find myself more attracted to discordance. |

Re: Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
Protest the Hero and Psychostick are pretty much the only bands I can enjoy of Heavy Metal.
Depends on the genre when it comes to lyrics. If the music is just ****ing awesome I'll focus on that and ignore the vocals, but vocals can easily ruin a song (honky tonk marijuana). About 90% of the french music I listen to, I listen to the lyrics cause they're always great. Often I listen to a certain band of singer purely because of the vocals. Some voices are just so powerful it's like 'Wat.' A good example is Beast - Mr. Hurricane (youtube it). |

Re: Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
I tend to stick with music without words/lyrics so I can focus more on the details of the music itself. I don't bother if the singer is not in key/sings badly, but if the music is good enough, it won't bother me at all.
In other words, my attention would be mostly on the kick/snare and bass line.

Re: Do you listen to the lyrics of your music?
Far better than rap. And mainstream rock isn't really very good most of the time nowadays. I listen to far more than metal though, and would consider industrial much more my speed than anything else. That or whatever genre you'd throw bands like Stabbing Westward into. Oh and when i say industrial i don't mean like Rammstein, i mean more like NIN or VNV Nation. I still like the heavier kind, but the more electronic sound suits much better.

I listen to the lyrics if they aren't garbage and contribute to the overall experience.

What does that have to do with what I said?
People who don't like metal like rap?
