Default A brief glimpse into the insanity in my area

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/rnr/3226771731.html

Let's see here. Starts off with "clever" naming. Quickly progresses to false accusations, bad spelling, and massive irony. More ad-hominem, followed by a healthy dose of bigotry and discrimination.

The level of stupid in this is just mind-boggling. I couldn't help but laugh out loud as I was reading. Sadly this isn't a comedy but a valid representation of how many in the Deep South actually think. I am surrounded by people such as this on an almost daily basis.

In order to be a "true 'mericun" around here, you must adamantly hate and blame everything on Obama or any other Democrat (previously Bill Clinton, etc...), vote Republican every single time, hate and blame everything on Atheists, Mexicans, gays and "librals", and generally push for a greater integration of church and state while claiming that your majority religion is the one being persecuted.

These are the types of people who surround me. Now, I don't mind if you don't like me on a personal level. But understand this is what I am constantly bombarded with. Understand that, even in such an environment, I have not been reduced to such a level. Understand that I have grown up in this environment all my life.

Also understand that we are products of our environment and perhaps even if you dislike me you will see that I am perhaps "less bad" than I could have been, given my environment.

I may wish I could have grown up someplace else, but we do not get to choose where we are born and raised. I did not have the resources many of you take for granted. Things you may consider "basic" I did without. I worked hard to get an education in spite of all this.

By the way, education was discouraged at every step, from the classmates who dismissed it as being nerdy to the professors who try to "break you". You are then rewarded with people who hate you for having "one 'o them thar cawlage dagrees so you muss think ur better than rest a us".

You should pretend that you're bi just to piss off your parents. If they mess with you based off of that, file hate crime charges. Those are fun.

With all seriousness, don't expect people to change just because you say it's better if they did; that'll make you sound stuck up since you're discrediting their beliefs based on what you know. Change is difficult for everyone, so things won't change for a long time. Now maybe if you caused a spectacle based on these issues, things could be changed, if forcibly.

Laughed uncontrollably at these. I hate it when people talk like this and try to pass themselves off as proud patriotic 'mericuns that go to church every sunday mornin'! People thinkin' us people from the South are ignoran!

The real question to me about this though is what to do with people like this. It's certainly an insanely hard question because if it was easy to answer you wouldn't be surrounded with people like that.

I can relate. All I can say is that you should stick to your guns and get yourself into a school that is sufficiently far away so you don't have to be surrounded by that crap. It's the primary reason I fled to the NE, back in the day. I've spent too much time around too many anti-intellectual, bigoted retards in both Oregon and Texas alike.

I'm kind of surprised Kansas isn't this retarded despite being mostly a republican / religious state. I facepalmed at the misspelling of religion yet the correct spelling of atheist.

I do this all the time, never has such an arrogant generalization been so truly accurate!

I also love the peace icon that comes up on the tab for his post on Craigslist.

UNGH: I'm surprised that you were able to develop to the way you are now being raised in such an environment. Then again not everyone is so foolish as to blindly accept all of their region's ideals, without putting a little thought into how moronic they can be first. Hopefully you can get out of there soon.

A true American believes that what they believe in is what others should believe in, prefer to be around others like him and makes exceptions to anything he believes in whenever convenient and/or popular.

Of course you could use that for anyone that calls themselves a true nationalist.

This sounds oddly familiar. Is the author by any chance running for Congress? Perhaps on a Republican ballot?

There are very many people like that, and it's nearly impossible to make them change. They refuse to take anything in, and try to force their beliefs onto others. They falsely believe certain conspiracies about the government here and the government in other countries (such as China is trying to take over the world and kill us all.)

Religion isn't what separates the stupid from the smart out where I live, but there's plenty of other stereotyping and misinformation to take its place.

I don't have a problem with people having a religion. I do have a problem when they try to push their religious beliefs onto other people, and especially when they try to integrate church and state. Religion should not be in politics and laws should not be biased towards or against any particular religion -- hence separation of church and state. Certainly people's religious beliefs should be considered when drafting new laws, but such beliefs should not themselves be codified into law nor should special preference be given.

I also have no problem with someone voting Republican or whatever else though I would prefer they put some thought into it. What I do have a problem with is blind parroting of very one-sided political dogma, ignorance, prejudice, intolerance, and furthering of misinformation, falsehoods, and lies.

Racism, intolerance, and religion-biased government should have no place in the USA.

It is an American right to be able to vote however you want. I support that right. I would prefer that people put some thought into it though.

It is also entirely possible to vote for a candidate whose views or position you don't fully support if, everything considered, he/she seems to you better than the other options. You could always choose to vote for the "least bad" candidate or you could choose to do a write-in vote or you could choose not to vote.

Just because the majority of Republican voters may be doing so for religious or dogmatic reasons does not mean they all are.

If you want to vote Communist or anything else I fully support your right to vote that way as well, whether or not it's a good idea, simply because it is your right as an American citizen. I would prefer that you put some thought into it is all.
