5th anniversary.
Well today was the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. I remembered it while the radio was on this morning, but i know a lot of people who didn't; I agree with a2p's claim that it seems as though most people care less and less about the attacks the more we've gone on. At school today, all we did was have about a minute or silence for the people who died, and my 2nd period geometry teacher remarked that everyone she's talked to can remember where they were and what they were doing when the towers fell. She said some kids had come into her 3rd period class and said the towers had fallen and she had said, "Stop kidding around, we're doing work today."
As for myself, I was in fifth grade, and I remember that there were many ambulances going by. When we asked our teacher why there were so many screaming sirens, she said that we would find out later, for we were going to a school assembly . When we got to the assembly, I distinctly remember them telling us that something "bad" has happened to our country. Of course, what could a 10 or 11 year possibly imagine that was so bad? I also distinctly remember asking them myself what exactly happened, and they told me that they, "Didn't know." However, I realize now that the reason they didn't tell us was because if someone had had a parent who worked in the buildings, they may have freaked out at the notion of their parents dying. I never really comprehended the magnitude of what happened until i was older, because, how could I? But it did change the world significantly. The "Age of Paranoia," to quote a Green Day song(Not that I listen to them anyway). Even things like the comic, "The Boondocks" changed from regular comedy to a comic about politics. I wonder if things can ever go back to the way they were?

I was in a card shop buying a card for someone when I heard it on the radio.
Every year when someone mentions 9/11 coming up I think "Oh **** I forgot who's birthday it is soon." |

Re: 5th anniversary.
My Dad knew an Israeli that called his wife about bank accounts and all the passwords that she did not have and then put himself in a safe in the first building before the plane crashed. Of course he died. His body was preserved and so his wife has burried him whole in Israel. He was a father of 3 kids.
Edit: I now know the name. Chagai Shefy

Re: 5th anniversary.
I was 11 and was getting ready for school when I heard it on the radio. My first reaction was "mom wtf they're talking about planes smashing into eachother in the US" and my mom was like "quit talking nonsense and come eat breakfast"
Later on I got to school and found my teacher watching TV and we watched the news for almost the entire day.

I remember 9/11. Since it didn't affect me, I didn't feel much of an impact from it, but it was pretty freaky hearing the news. I didn't get paranoid or anything, life was pretty much the same.

I remember watching the TV and thinking Cool! Just like the movies. Except it was for real, so we discussed this in class later.

Re: 5th anniversary.
We kill about 100 Iraqis a day. 3000 a month, figure how long we were there. Imagine how many of them weren't terrorists?
edit: on topic, same thing happened with me, about when it actually happened. I remember hoping there wouldn't be school the next day more than anything. My uncle was supposed to be near the building that day but his train broke down or something like that so we was stuck there instead of stuck in ash. edit x2 : Anyone see the movie "World trade centre" It sucked :/

I was in AP chem when it happened, and nobody knew what to think. The teacher just came in and said something about how "the news is showing something about planes flying into the twin towers." So, we sat around and watched the TV, neglecting our lab for a period and a half. Today I had a PDEs exam and class as usual. Other than my favorite radio show host broadcasting from NYC, I didn't hear much about it at all. I don't think we've forgotten at all, though. There has to be a time where you move on, and five years is a good long while. We've dealt with the response, changed how we view terrorism, and become more dedicated to national security and world security. We'll always have a deep, dark scar where we were grievously injured, and we'll see that scar every day. There's really no reason to shut down the country for a day of remembrance. Just consider how we celebrate the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor bombings. --Guido http://andy.mikee385.com |

Re: 5th anniversary.
I was in 6th grade...in gym. I remember this girl Emily and like two other girls were crying and then were worried we wouldn't be able to go to Washington D.C. for our 8th grade trip >_> I think my mom picked me up or something. My dad was supposed to go into the subway under the towers that day but he was late and had to go a different way. Anyway, I know mothers were coming to pick kids up that day. It was kind of chaotic.

Re: 5th anniversary.
As depressing as it may sound, it just becomes hard to keep track of all the tragedies. I promise we don't forget them, we just add them to the list.
Also, every news channel this morning covered memorial services. I definitely couldn't bear to watch so much heartache that early. Or really ever. We haven't forgotten. |

Re: 5th anniversary.
I was watching Daily Planet today and they explained why every person in the world is able to recall precisely what they were doing when they heard the news about 9/11. It's called a flash memory, it's quite interesting, look into it more if you feel like it.
I was on my way to my sixth day of grade six in the new middle school, walking with two of my friends in grade seven. One of them told me and the other that America was under attack and that it was World War Three. We didn't believe him and made fun of him. Later, when we got to school, the teachers all told us what had happened. I'm on the west coast so most of the information of WHAT had happened had been finalized by before I had even woken up. I remember gas prices sky rocketing later that day to over a dollar a litre, though that price is normal now. |
