ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
This is just for fun -- spitballing ideas. It can be as far into the future as you'd like.
My own wishes: Future of internet connection: 1. At some point, we're going to get (something like) Google Goggles as the norm (augmented reality in our glasses), which will eventually wrap up the functionality of modern-day smartphones. 2. But this will likely upgrade into contact lenses 3. And, eventually, into neural interfacing that is fueled from your own natural biochemistry Future of biochemistry: 1. Bioanalysis mechanisms (no need to go get checkups from doctors) that will give you real-time analysis of your blood and other bodily functions 2. Gene sequencing 3. Eventually I do think we'll be able to do mechanical biointerfacing like we see in Deus Ex: Human Revolution 4. Organ regrowth 5. Genetic engineering similar to what we see in Gattaca Future of Religion: 1. Hahahahahaha, this shit's gone Computers: 1. Moore's Law comes up to an abrupt end once we brush up against HUP 2. Molecular computing 3. Quantum computing 4. In general, everything will be computerized. Things like kitchen appliances and clothing will have the ability to provide computerized information feedback. Artificial Intelligence: 1. We'll be able to brute-compute the neural network of the brain (as the Blue Brain Project is currently trying to do) and, in turn, be able to simulate its underlying subroutines. 2. Once certain macros are established, a lot of otherwise human-based manual gruntwork will be replaced with AI. Civilization: 1. I genuinely have no idea if we'll ever make it to a Type I civilization (total control over our planet and its processes), but I imagine so unless we get ourselves killed by then. 2. FTL travel's a bitch. I don't know if we'll ever figure out a good way to travel around our galaxy, let alone travel to other galaxies. There are tons more that I think will be likely but I'd like to hear from you guys Last edited by Reincarnate; 07-28-2012 at 08:41 PM.. |

Re: ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
The main things I'm hoping for are sophisticated 3D printing and thorium based nuclear power (fusion would be great but it's 50 years away)
The future of transportation is going to suck unfortunately, either we'll have to swap to electric or be able to synthesize fossil fuels (which would take an asston of energy but I don't think air travel would remain feasible without it). Other things that are sorely needed are genetically engineered crops to survive harsher conditions and be more nutritious and some kind of easy water filtration. Easy efficient solar power would be great too. Quote:

Re: ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
For future technology: Probably your own servant robots which can teach you how to cook and other nice shit. Possibly even teach art techniques and explain science. Also being able to get rid of birth defects completely, such as Anencephaly. Edit: Also being able to cure injuries from certain species. Such as brown recluse spiders, etc.

Re: ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
What would be a huge breakthrough in technology though IMO is faster healing so it doesn't take months or years to heal major injuries

Re: ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
We don't even have a good way of traveling around this planet, if you've been paying attention. Patashu mentioned it, but I don't think most people realize how close we are to the point where we're just not going to be doing the fossil fuel thing anymore.

It's 2012 already. Why is my flying car still in the shop with the personal jetpack? <<
Scientists have already succeeded in making a complete working computer model of a single bacterium, but it required over 900 papers' worth of data and a 128-core setup to run. As for religion...I don't see it going anywhere. They're mighty stubborn like that. What I want to see? Six Million Dollar Man-type prosthetic limbs that are as good as or better than the real thing. |

I can see the portal gun being an effective mode of transport for items.
not too sure if it's realistically safe though.. |

Out of ALL the possible birth defects to choose from, you choose the one that results in babies being born without brains? lmfao lmfao lmfao lmfao, understatement of the century XD XD XD PS here's what happens when a baby with anencephaly LIVES: That's right, guys. This baby can't feel a damn thing. He doesn't see, doesn't hear, doesn't feel, doesn't taste, doesn't think, etc. He's basically an insect reacting involuntarily to external stimuli. I want a ****ing time-travelling Delorean.
I believe future transportation will rely on hydrogen fuel cells. Batteries are terribad. Oh look, it already exists. |

Not all technological but whatever.
- The ability to fix spinal cord damage. - Figure out why cats purr. - Cure Alzheimer, FFI, skyzophrenia and other creepy pathologies. - Create actual DossarLX ODI pills (also rip). - End moral ethics and finally evolve our way out of racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. I'll come back later with answers you might prefer to this.

Re: ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
To add to Reincarnate's list...
Teleportation - probably via some quantum mechanical physics that hasn't been discovered yet or is in its infancy. Mild Telekinesis/Mind Control - you would be able to merely "think" to communicate with machines due to various technological hook-up transmitters on your body which amplify your thought signals and due to similar receivers on machines, which obey them. Mind control possible due to any kind of backfiring of this system -- i.e. a crack may allow someone with these hookups to have thoughts controlled by others, or maybe on purpose (Dystopia/etc...) Nanobot surgeon virus/cancer killers - much of the field of medicine is replaced by nanobots which not only can repair any aspect of you (including down to the DNA) but also can destroy any viruses, no matter the mutation, due to advanced AI and capabilities of their own. Nanobot death plague/war bots - when the nanobots themselves go renegade either through deliberate malicious human manipulation and/or some kind of mutation themselves, and begin to do nanodamage on a massive scale! Destroyed ecosystem - too little too late and now humanity must rely on technology to even survive on the planet they abused. Destroyed moon - too much exploitation of the moon has virtually destroyed it. Wars fought on the moon have obliterated much of the surface and, in fact, the moon's orbit is coming closer to the earth. Humans need to escape the planet before it collides. Space travel - to anywhere in the solar system and beyond. Miniature portable ecosystems allow limited living conditions in between finding livable planets. Artificial planetoids - created as temporary habitats, though found to be overly fragile. Communication with intelligent ET - Yeah, it's probably out there somewhere. Yeah, humans will probably communicate at some point or vica-versa. Life extension deep freeze - think Fry from Futurama. Body swapping -- you could essentially mentally map onto different physical bodies, so when you're dying you could map your mind into a better, less dying body. At first these will be machine bodies but later they can be human or "other" as well. So yeah, basically really Sci-fi kind of stuff. |

Re: ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
Sounds simple, but wifi that can ALWAYS be accessible worldwide (wifi no matter where you go basically).

I remember hearing lotsa talk about this somewhere. And old ideas turned anew to advance in it or something. If there is any possibility soon, I think google would be able to provide this. They already got the entire damn world in their hands. Satellites and sht. Or, it will be from lesser known company that none of us know of.

Re: ITT we predict major breakthroughs in future technology
That sounds like what Tesla was working on, except it was electricity and expensive as fuq. (and, well not worldwide either, but eventually if researched enough I bet we could've built upon it.)
