i'm atheist because i've been raised as one, and because christianity (which would be the only religion i could choose) seems to be filled with ignorant people and based on ignorance. also, science is really cool.

I'm atheist because I have no need for god, and no reason to believe in god.

EDIT: I was raised catholic, but I always thought is was pretty ****ing stupid. A bunch of mindless people (if you can call them that) offering themselves up to some imaginary person because a man in a white robe told them so.

agnosticism is the gap between atheism and religion. it's when you're unsure whether you want to become a really religious person or live life with the belief there is a higher power, but without worship/church/other stuff religious people do. (I'm atheist)

I can only imagine that people define themselves as agnostic because they don't want to prescribe to some mandate purported by any religion with the man-made statutes packaged with them, but at the same time believe there must be some higher power. I mean, there is always some things that (seemingly) will never be explained. For example, assume the big bang was how it happened, where did that spec of matter come from? If you want to call that first moment "God," be my guest. In the realm of belief, it doesn't really matter.

I'm agnostic because I find it downright idiotic to believe or not believe in something that we have absolutely no proof supporting either way.

Agnosticism admits one is open minded and undecided... if somewhat apathetic even to the actual answer.

No, actually. Atheism requires no faith. None. Bubkes. Unless you think not believing in Santa Clause, bigfoot or alien abduction requires faith.

And this is important, too: agnosticism is not a philosophical position to take on whether there's a god. It is an epistemological one. It is not incompatible with atheism. Atheism means no belief in god. Agnosticism means you can't know for sure the truth value of gods.

Erm. No, I know what I said, and it's the opposite of what you just said.

Essentially, what you're doing is saying all of atheism is just one type--"strong" atheism.

People also need to distinguish between weak and strong agnosticism.

A weak agnostic says "For all I know, there is actually proof of the existance of God, but since I'm not aware of this proof, I'm going to refrain from asserting God or !God"

A strong agnostic says "The entire question is meaningless, because whether there is a God or not, any evidence that could possibly exist is beyond human comprehension."

Also, despite the linguistic similarity, I see a difference between an atheist, and a nontheist, if just because nontheists are capable concepts like deism, and certain kinds of strong agnosticism, while atheists, especially strong atheists tend to be just as unbending in their stance as devout theists.
