Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
I know nothing about this shit -- but is using it, by default (i.e. the TorBrowser), sufficiently safe for the sake of making yourself untraceable to your regular IP/etc? Or is there some other setting I should be enabling?

I'm pretty sure Tor is safe as is. Just follow the directions they tell you to make sure. I downloaded it just to play around but it's really slow so don't be surprised if it takes you three minutes to load Google.

Re: Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
I understand why it is slow and I'm fine with that.
I'm just concerned that, say, a site could still get through and see old cookies or see some piece of info in some way, etc, even if the IP is different |

Used to use it for when I roamed the deep web, there was an infographic about setting tor up properly which was pretty decent. Could have a look if you wanted Man.
This is very basic, you've probably seen this .. The other was like, full setting up proxies and protecting your HDD and all sorts of in-depth stuff if you're interested lol Edit - Can't find it, nearly 6 am anyway. Last edited by Tarrik; 03-28-2013 at 01:41 PM.. |

Re: Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
I've never used it, but maybe it could be a good idea to use tor inside of sandboxie? Even if it did manage to save some kind of cookies that would be contained inside of sandboxie with all of its virtual values.

Re: Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
Using TOR alongside HTTPS Everywhere is pretty solid. If you want to know how safe it is, alongside the bitcoin currency, people make untraceable drug transactions via websites like silkroad (you'll have to Google a little to figure out the URL). It's a pretty cool site to check out regardless as it's been featured in shows like National Geographic where people would buy kilograms of Ketamine and have it sent to foreclosed homes.

what is silk road?
all this deep web shit is like, very reminiscent of the kinds of discussions the characters had in The Matrix |

Re: Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
Deep Web is basically where you get paranoid that police are going to break into your house while you're browsing, even behind Tor, etc. You can come across some baaaaaad stuff pretty quick haha.

Re: Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
Silkroad is just a black market, mostly for drugs. It's a cool way to see the sketchy shit on the deep web without having to come across any crap you don't want to look at.

Re: Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
Yeah the deepweb can get pretty fucked up.
Using Tor + a VPN would be solid, MAKE SURE you have no-script and adblock plus enabled, and that you do not store cookies and enable javascript by default blahblah. All around Tor is a pretty secure browsing tool though, especially with being able to change your anonymous identity at the click of a button. It all depends what you plan to do with it. Some malicious sites on the deepweb will be obvious, some will not. There are a lot of phishing sites that look identical to the real site (especially with Silk Road). A lot of people use encryption for messages on there, especially stuff seen in deepweb Pastebins. I forget the program needed but it's pretty simple, and if you do need to BUY something off the deepweb chances are they'll require you to speak only with encrypted messages and through using bitcoins (which are reallllly expensive these days. 1 bitcoin used to be 10 USD. Now it is 1 btc for 90 USD). It's pretty interesting though, apparently there's 91000 terabytes worth of junk on the deepweb. Most of those sites will be followed by a weblink that looks like "fjsgljsgl9342porn.onion" which gets pretty confusing. Any interesting sites make sure to keep em in a word doc with a description. Stay vigilant and don't go too deep~

Re: Anyone use Tor / Vidalia?
remember if you go too deep you'll hear a knock at your door and it will be your mother and she'll say how disappointed she is in you and wont send you cards anymore on your birthday
