I've only got the groundwork for this done, though, so don't expect it to be ready soon.
I'm just wondering because it's something I've been wanting for quite a while (and I'm sure many people would love it as well).

Don't really care how long it takes as long as the end result is good, so for now get hype :V

I'll shoot some PMs/IMs and see who might be available to help with the new site code. (can someone give me a rundown of how to properly utilize Git and GitHub? that's the most intimidating thing for me personally, lol.)

as for easy simfiles/notecharts: sounds lovely.

what's tough in terms of making those simfiles, I think, is knowing the audience. do we cater to one style, or a few styles, or have one-size-fits-all notecharts? in my opinion, even "easy" charts for pad and keyboard should be very different from each other. not to mention, there's 4-panel, 8-panel, PIU, 4-key spread, 4-key index, 6-key, etc.

what approach should be taken?

I would say that having files separated between keyboard and pad files would be a good idea, similar to how ZiV does.

github is just hosting the repository that you clone local copies of. making patches is and most likely what you are going to be doing with git in this case. to do this, refer to: http://ariejan.net/2009/10/26/how-to...atch-with-git/

well most of us don't usually step for pad, so our output might be bad, which wouldn't be too rad

It needs to be able to pass the .sm file as a hash to check for exactly the same files because right now it only uses the song title and subtitle.

If it ever comes to it you could probably convince houkounchi to host the new smo and just redirect to smo.net and sm.com etc..

I dunno about a forced updater but it'd at least need a way to say "go update the damn game!"

This is actually built into the engine, SMO just doesn't use it.

Yeah, something like that would be viable, probably.

shakesoda outta nowhere

http://www.stepmania.com/ has been moved to the new design. if you need something that was on the old site that somehow wasn't already broken it's at old.stepmania.com.

I haven't got a bunch of the features I want to be on the site rolled out but unlike the other thing it at least functions.

Looks really clean and simple

One thing I'd recommend is having a "Getting Started" page or something to that degree. Some kind of basic introduction as to what StepMania actually is. Having the tiny little box at the top of the home page really isnt sufficient and the list of blog posts doesn't really need to be shown to new players going to the site to download it for the first time. Consider the audience a little better maybe because I don't think your home page is really working as well as it could.

My two cents at least..

Yeah, the main page isn't very noob friendly and a getting started page is a good idea. I just haven't had time to dedicate to designing + writing that up.
