Ready for a cool story about jealous bitches? Actually this is just a rant to make me feel better. It's finals week, and I'm on edge. Okay, here goes.

So, I generally don't have experience with people competing with me grade-wise because I never made friends with people in my classes (I am a commuter making it difficult to make friends at school). Over the last year I befriended a girl who 75% of the time she is really cool and fun to talk to, but the other 25% of the time she is a complete bitch. This is especially true when we receive grades (we have had several classes together in the past, and have even worked on group assignments together). I think she is under the impression that she is more intelligent than I am because every time I have performed better on exams and assignments than her, she has turned ice cold and basically writes it off as luck. The thing is, I have consistently done better than her in all of our classes, so I don't see how she keeps coming to the same conclusion. Anyways, I want you to read a little AIM conversation I just finished having with her, and I want you to tell me if I completely over reacted or if she is crazy. Thanks in advance, because I didn't know psychology majors could actually be like this and not be able to psychoanalyze themselves.

hmm, well if she's just normally like that it's good to tell her so she can work on it. I do agree that she needs to stop trying to make herself feel better by saying you have some sort of friendship going on with teachers, that's ridiculous.

I'm sure that because you told her how you felt, things'll come around eventually.

What's worse is that people would be friends with you so they can use you for homework and such. I don't understand why people are so lazy these days and realize that grades are based on how you perform in class. I guess it's something to be expected in today's world.

If this had been a one time thing I probably would have told her "yeah we go out for coffee and have long walks on the beach together, that's why I got an A" but this is something she has done consistently every time we have gotten a test back since I met her. It's so frustrating, and the only way a person can fix bad behavior is if they realize what they are doing or someone bitch slaps them across the face with the truth. I'm probably going to end up apologizing tomorrow for over reacting, but I am in no way going to make her feel like I am going to tolerate this anymore.

People need to rationalize things, and most would rather rationalize the blame onto some external factor. It's a coping mechanism, and while it's a negative one it might serve to calm her down enough to get on with a positive action-based coping skill. More than likely though it calms her down enough for her to proceed to not deal with the problem at all.

It also depends on the friend. Some friends expect you to agree with them every time they complain about something, while other friends actually want your honest opinion. At my college we're extremely competitive about grades since the classes are on a curve and the A's are capped at a certain %, but we also stick together with friends and help each other out. I guess the mentality is if you're my friend, I'll help you out. Otherwise, too bad. There are a bunch of classes I've taken that I know I wouldn't have gotten through without having some friends to study and do homework with.

That's hilarious, Rubino. I don't think you overreacted at all. In fact, I probably would have responded the same exact way as you did. If she was insinuating that she was smarter than you (as consistently as you claimed in your post) I say you're more than justified to confront her about it.
