Quick question though, why the odd dimensions on the banner?

Practically all versions of Stepmania, including SM5, compress the image quality of banners that adhere to the classic 256x80 dimensions—usually it's the type that's affected the most and worst. By doubling the dimensions to 512x160, the compression isn't nearly as bad and won't leave JPEG artifacts everywhere, so it has pretty much become the standard for banner sizes as of now. Banners are more important than backgrounds because a larger majority of players play with 0% background brightness anyways, so you should probably spend more time making sure banners are pretty, legible, and readable.

As a side note, even though people are still sticking with 640x480 and 800x600 for backgrounds, I personally suggest going larger in size, more towards a widescreen aspect ratio because of SM5 making it the default. But like I mentioned earlier, most people play with 0% background brightness anyways, so this isn't nearly as important than how the banner should look.
