But seriously, I think that this is a bad idea. Why would people want this feature in the engine when we have: -Level rank comparisons for veteran accounts -Lurking the brag board for people that are getting scores like yours and starting rivalries -Opening your level rank page and finding scores that are skunking your average rank |

+1 to plans idea.
Or just add a scroll bar for the lil "highscores" thing.

Re: Highscores in-game.
Plan's idea is a great one. It would actually give a nice indication of the score differences around you, which are great ways to encourage improvement.
If you can see a constant target (i.e. someone above you within a viewable rank), you can keep boosting your score to try and rivals others further up the list. |

Re: Highscores in-game.
I like Plan's idea, but isn't there a problem with it? Namely, wouldn't that be very database-intensive?
I mean, as-is, it just pulls up the top 10 or so to show you. Since it does the same with everybody, this can be made to run quite efficiently. With Plan's idea, say you score somewhere around 30,000'ish. So not only is there the assumption all these scores are still saved on the database, but it has to pick out the ones closest to your most recent and specially-craft something just for you. It potentially has to go through the entire database because you could get a score anywhere, so this can't possibly be made as efficient as just "pull the top x scores". OP's suggestion doesn't work too well either because showing more scores won't solve much. It's just instead of 10 AAA's you'll have 50 AAA's or what have you. If not right away then it will eventually get there and you're back to square one. Even if you say "Well just show the top 10 scores which aren't AAA's" you'll end up with 10 black flags or booflags or similar. The problem can't be solved because there is a definite best score (AAA) which is possible for each chart. So I would say the high scores lists are kind of useless in the sense you already know what it's going to be. You're better off comparing average rank with people to see who has average ranks near yours and try to compete with them or something. |
