I've been using double setup for years, how long would spread take?
So I recently found out that using double setup (using 8 keys, 2 keys per arrow) is considered "cheating" or easier than spread, although I can't even jumpstream for shit. I feel like I should change over to spread, although I can't imagine being able to control 1 hand for 2 keys. Should I change over to spread if I want to get an "official" score and if so, how long should it take?

You're wasting time thinking about it. Just do it!

I've been playing double setup for 3 years before switching. The switch is worth it!

I played index for 5 years before beginning spread. It took roughly 3 songs to get the 1 note per finger association down.
It is not complicated at all. Just do it. |

Could you make a 'how to switch from spread to index' thread? I use index for Taiko but the skill doesn't ever seem to transfer over to any 4k modes. I've always been curious to try it, but I usually do pretty horribly.

I have no knowledge of how to switch from spread to index and I'd imagine that is a vastly more complicated process. I've never forgotten my index muscle memory so it would be impossible for me to even think about.
Learning to play index originally was a very time consuming and difficult learning experience. Last edited by Izzy; 02-8-2016 at 10:41 AM.. |

Re: I've been using double setup for years, how long would spread take?
Update: I've started to do spread months ago and have almost gotten to the point where I'm equally skilled in both 8-key and 4-key layouts. I'm pretty proud of my performance so far, here's a recent screenshot of me completing a song with 1.2x rate. I can easily do this on 8 keys but haven't been able to do this via spread when I first started.

nice. Yeah, the general curve for muscle memory commitment on spread is 2 weeks to a month. Some patterns in particular are kinda weird on spread, but those just take some getting used to. (i.e. split jumptrills, runningmen, sandwiches)
