Default What the ****

Well, on Tuesday night, I went to bed, did nothing out of the ordinary, downloaded nothing. I wake up Wednesday morning, and I turn on my laptop, and I sit there for a second, and the screen stays blank after the F11 System Recovery screen. I don't have time to mess with it because I know that I would probably miss my bus. I get home, and I restart the laptop and turn it on again, then sit there for about 15 minutes. This screen comes up that says my System32 is missing. I kinda freak out, and I look for my System Recovery discs, and couldn't find them. My stepdad went into the garage, and found the one's for our old computer. I installed them, and am using it now. They were from 2004/2005. All my pictures/music/everything are gone. Were they deleted? What happened.

Either you weren't keeping good care of your computer and someone was able to get into it, and destroy the folder entirely, or you have someone who doesn't like you and deliberately decided to destroy it. =/

That really sucks though.

Nobody was in my room though, I sleep with my door locked, and then when I wake up, I go to take a shower.

EDIT: I've found backups of my music, pictures, and other things but like, what do I do. Do I have to reinstall my Internet Explorer and games and stuff?

If you did a system recovery, that should restore your computer back to how it was when you bought it; or in this case, back to how your old computer was when you bought it back in 2004/2005. Usually, new computers (assuming it's windows) come with Internet Explorer preinstalled. You'll have to do all the updates yourself - such as updating to IE 7, etc. You'll have nothing but what the factory installed programs/applications were. So yes, you'll have to redownload the games and any other programs and files that you had prior to the recovery.

This is a common windows problem. Chances are windows did not completely finish "unloading" before it issues the kill command to shut the power off. System 32 is not a folder you can just delete, that takes skill.

Well all I did was select it and push delete, no skill needed.

It takes skill to delete the folder while you are running windows out of that specific folder.

If you'd actually done that, you'd have realized that Windows will not let you simply delete the folder because the files are in use as you are trying to delete them.

As for NFD, I'm really sorry to hear. Sounds like you've had more than your fair share of computer troubles lately. I had a laptop that had worked perfectly fine for years, and the night before going out of country for a month, I turned it on to load a couple things on it and it wouldn't start. Unfortunately, it was somehow in such bad condition that I couldn't even reformat it. So, I know how you feel. At least you can still use your computer.

Well true it was an old system32 folder off a partition.

Being on-topic.
NFD you must have done something or gotten some virus 'cause system32 doesn't just magically self delete.

It just finished I think. Well, I DID download something called Second Life on Monday night, but it's completely deleted now. My laptop has a sticker that says:

Designed for Windows XP
Windows Vista Capable

Should I switch to Vista?

No.
And second life is stupid.

Where on earth would you hear positive stuff about it?

Nah I'm kidding, there are a lot of good things about Vista. But I personally don't like it at all, and Windows XP runs faster anyways.

There is also now a Direct X 10 for windows XP.

Funny, for me, and everyone else I've heard report about it, Vista is eons faster than XP.

Maybe Vista's slower if you only have a gig of RAM, but from where I'm standing, Vista makes XP look like it's crawling.

I get 15-20 more FPS while playing games while running XP so that's good enough for me.

XP > Vista, don't even argue. Vista requires 1-1.5 GB more RAM than Xp does because it's such a hog on power. Also, 64-bit XP allows you to use plug-in flash RAM like Vista does so there's absolutely no use or need for Vista.

The people who defend Vista are the people who are stuck with it and can't go back to XP for whatever reason.

uh oh looks like someone's completely clueless and talking out their ass

Vista doesn't constantly use memory. Instead of just letting free RAM sit around doing nothing, Vista uses it to speed up whatever you might do next.

@Dawn:

Idea!

How about you buy a decent computer instead of relying on 1GB of RAM and a 128MB video card for your 120GB HDD?

Maybe Vista wouldn't be so slow if you kept up with hardware. I've never once had a single issue with Vista on my custom-built machine. Tokzic built his as well. We both chose Vista. We could have easily bought XP, but what's the point? Our computers don't suck ass, so they have no problem running a benchmark operating system. In fact, this rig was just a little over a grand and I more than exceed the maximum system recommendations for Vista.

Hell, my parents bought a Dell for $300 that has 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD. Obviously has no problem running Vista. They didn't want it at first but I told them it'd be the same as XP. And you know what, they haven't had a single issue with Vista either despite being computer illiterate.

Get with the damn times.

As for NFD, you have no reason to switch to Vista, so don't bother.
