Oh snap first birthday thread of FFRevival!

The first birthday thread since FFR came up goes to HAMMYMCSQUIRREL!

Instead of the traditional attempt at humor in these threads, I want to share a very special story. No BS, this is all real.

About 20 months ago, I was lucky enough to be alongside my pal Hammy on his way down to school in Texas. For two years he had been my best friend while I lived in Wisconsin. He came to my door when I didn't know anyone or anything within a 100 mile radius of where I was. He helped me put together my first furniture. He took me sledding. We went out for wings about every week for those two years - even when the winter weather made the trips nearly impossible. He even taught me how to play spread =p.

Our trip down to Texas was full of laughs and good times, but also apprehension. I knew that this was going to be the last time I got to spend a significant amount of time with my buddy for a long time, maybe forever. When it finally came time to say goodbye, we didn't even really know what to say. I remember standing next to him and we couldn't make eye-contact. I muttered something along the lines of, "I'm going to miss you," and gave him a hug before heading to my hotel to sleep before my morning flight.

I did not sleep at all that night. I had never in my life had a friend like Hammy, and I doubt I ever will again. His trusting nature and kindheartedness were things I had never seen before and he was so nice to me even though he had never met me before. I cried as hard as I have ever cried in my life that night. The thought of not being able to meet Hammy for wings and Quaker Steak & Lube followed by hours of inside joke humor was absolutely unbearable. Even though I was in a new city where I knew nobody, I never felt alone until Hammy left.

I miss you so much Hammy. You're one of the best friends I've ever had. I hope one day soon we can meet up again.

Wow... Thank you so much for the kind words, Chaz. Here I was thinking my birthday was just going to be another day with some spammed "happy birthday" messages and some phone calls, but this has definitely made this day unique beyond me simply being another year older. I really wasn't expecting a birthday thread like this. Hell, I actually wasn't expecting a birthday thread at all. I know I joked about it the other day but man... the nostalgia.

You're one of the greatest friends I have. That's throughout my entire life, not just in the present. I'm really glad we've kept in touch despite all of the crap that keeps us occupied in our lives. Some of the best memories I have consist of times when we would hang out. I also cried a lot that night you had to leave. I haven't felt that sad since. It ****ing sucked, and I'll never forget it. I can't even begin to count the awesome moments we've had, but you did a good job at listing the bulk of them. xD I can't begin to say how much I appreciate everything you've done for me, man. I'll make sure to haul my ass up to New Jersey some day.

Edit: Damn, I was too caught up in the moment to thank everybody else for the birthday wishes. Sorry about that. xD Thanks, everybody!

Wow, that was really really touching. At first when I saw what Chaz put, I was like, "Damn, do I really gotta read this?" As I read, I knew exactly what he was talking about. I've never met a friend like Hammy. And just like what Chaz, I doubt that I ever will again. I hope that I hang around with him again some day. Shoot, I'd even like to hang with Chaz. (Dude's awesome. And he broke my guitar!) Reading that almost made me tear up. XD
