Oh, I'm aware they started to play the game right after the showcase, that should be common sense. But it's pretty obvious no one stuck with it.

there are people posting videos constantly at a level that you probably wouldn't even consider worth looking at because you've been shielded within this community, where even the lowest-end players here would be better than 99%+ of the people who don't make their presence known or are exclusively on something like reddit and not any other sub-community, so just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist, much like any other gaming community where you only see the front-facing players and want to declare things inactive/dead; doesn't work that way

it's also somewhat ironic that you yourself mention that this is the game "that everyone recognizes but no one plays and will probably stay that way throughout the game's existence", yet you have an entry in AGDQ yourself with that point of futility that you yourself exercised.

additional thing: it's very easy to get people involved and interested in the game, you just need to tie it into something that people like. TaroNuke/puurokulho aren't reaping the benefits of using their work ethic in making StepMania look awesome and more appealing by tying elements of Undertale - one of Puuro's videos is on pace to eclipse 750k views in under 8 months, and a video of MIKO playing said chart is about to eclipse 250k views in that same time period. these aren't people with super established fucking names to themselves for other things, these are people who are smart and know where to target.

everyone who wants to make StepMania again needs to stop targeting this niche community of high-end players and actually branch out into things that are inventive, unique, and awesome. mindless smashing your brains out to hyper-relevant charts doesn't do the job - it's impressive, but won't hold attention and want to get people involved.

I'm kinda bad but I always watch random stepmania vidyas and comment on them, getting hyped. I miss diamondcrafter even though he was pretty annoying, I had fun getting hyped over his stuff heh.

There are tons of new players and alot of FFR players low key try to get more players and help them out, I love seeing walrusizer on the stepmania reddit answer questions about how to get better with "play more" makes me lol every time.

I think the key thing is we need to get everyone onto these forums cause it's basically the central hub.. It's a shame, staiain did great at agdq but imo he could have explained better how to get into the game, the FFR forums etc.. At the moment there's no real central community, gotta get everyone here

Another key thing is getting people to feel accomplished for what they've done, it's the reason people post videos and brag board threads and such. I love how FFR announces when you hit milestones on the front page, I always hop to people's profiles and get hype when they get milestones.

Even so, osu has like 100x as much content as stepmania, in terms of random things like videos, Osumania world championships etc.. And it's been out for a few years, comparatively to stepmania...

i'd love for you to expand beyond the scope of what SM can do in a way that's actually going to bring the game to others, personally.

but i'm tired of everyone spewing shit about how this this and that will help. you're actually someone with the talent that could do it outside of mindlessly smashing keys and hoping it catches attention because you've got the ability to develop and program shit.

utilize that ability like you are now and do more things that the current SM devs couldn't.

this might be an unpopular opinion here, but, stepmania is by definition a competitive game. even if you don't compare yourself to other players, you compete with yourself for self-improvement. i feel like that's why this "niche community" has developed a standard of high difficulty. there may be a huge amount of people that aren't high-level players, posting more 'entry-level' scores and such on reddit, but honestly, what beginner (in any game, sport, or hobby) doesn't aspire to be the best they can be? all the new players who got into stepmania after seeing staiain saw exactly how high the standard is for playing at a high level - it shouldn't be a surprise that stepmania calls for very very very challenging content.

personally, i was really glad to see the general skill level involved in stepmania go through the fuckin roof after a certain point. before getting back into stepmania, the last pack i probably downloaded was ODI2 or something years ago. then i got back into it, realized i was missing out real hard when i downloaded all the yolomanias and nuclear blast JS packs, which seem to be mostly post-2012/2013ish.

anyway, i forgot what my point was

Not an unpopular opinion at all, especially with the way that you brought your point across. self-improvement is a huge part of the game, and yes, is a huge part of this niche community. However, that alone, for me, doesn't make the game competitive (and there's no argument back and forth for this: we both will have to agree to disagree because it's very much black or white in my eyes). Anyone can improve at a hobby because they aspire to be better, but that doesn't mean you're being competitive with yourself as much as it is a desire become more proficient (proficiency vs. competition are two different roads imo). Take playing an instrument for example: certainly, you could aspire to perform better than someone else, but if you're using simply playing to get better without benchmarking against someone else, then I feel like the competitive element is null. I certainly respect your opinion, though being that regardless of that minor point: self-improvement is huge.
