I need srs mastering help
I've been going at this chiptune business for 5 years now. I still have no fucking clue how to do proper mastering or how to get a decent sound from my gameboy. The one variable that doesn't change is the raw recording. I can't make that any better.
Post-processing can make or break a chiptune. I'm yet to have a good template to work with. It sounds pretty weak on its own, so it needs a boost to make it sound "fuller" without drowning the limiter. I'm pretty much done an EP I've been working on for a little bit, but I want everything to have consistent mastering on it. I need halp D: This is what it sounds like from my gameboy https://soundcloud.com/kommisar/satori/s-IESkp This is what I come up with post-production https://soundcloud.com/kommisar/transparent-heart It's sort of how I want it to sound, but it's not very...loud.

Re: I need srs mastering help
Your stuff sounds very nice even without proper master (or even any?), so I hardly see a huge importance in mastering in your case. Not invalidating, but just saying.
I also can't give much advice/help since I'm only just getting into proper mastering myself, sorry. :s

Re: I need srs mastering help
for chiptune the difference is taking a low-res sound and making it as audible as any regular electronic song. it might be more obvious to someone who listens to chiptune a lot. it makes a huge difference

Re: I need srs mastering help
I can't really give proper mastering advice since I'm not into mastering chiptunes much (basic idea of mastering is to make the volume as close to 0dB, right?), though I do have a question:
When mastering chiptunes, is it a rule to not use multiband compressions? It's a bit of a dumb guess, but I was just wondering. |

Re: I need srs mastering help
don't sweat it too much, throwin up the threshold and trying to master simply to get a track as absolutely loud as possible is a giant 'fuck you' to all sound engineers, as the great joel zimmerman once said
there are some good plugins that assist your ear in mastering if you're wanting to finalize your tracks though
