Re: Teacher Fail
speaking as a student, i'd probably dig it a little as long as you use them sparingly. maybe these are better-served in powerpoints/presentations than as permanent fixtures, though

Re: Teacher Fail
Posting memes is probably a horrible idea. I'd go for an XKCD strip or two, as Ben suggested. Some clever humour, but nothing too try-hard or weird.

Re: Teacher Fail
Since I went back to school a year and a half ago I've been sitting in a grade lower than my own, sometimes two grades for classes. The grade one lower than mine seems to like memes, and stuff. The one two grades lower seems a bit internet disconnected somehow, which...is probably a good thing!
Anyway, if you're still committed to this idea, don't go full out and keep referencing this. If you throw it once in a blue moon kids will be like "LOL HE GETS US SO MUCH." But after the third or fourth reference they are likely to get bored of it and think it's lame. Anyway, glhf man. |

Re: Teacher Fail
Good point. You'd be surprised but not everyone knows everything about "internet culture" and all the sub-cultures that exist.
If anything, the majority of the people i know irl don't have a thorough understanding of internet culture mostly because the way they use the internet doesn't fully expose them to it (some people only live in their facebook and instagram bubbles). You wouldn't know how many times I had to explain WHAT a "meme" means, or what reddit is, or convincing someone that dragon dildos exist. That's why I think something like a comic would work better since no one needs to have an understanding of internet culture to "get it" |

Re: Teacher Fail
An XKCD comic would do great, honestly. Those who are nerds will recognize it, and people who frequent the Internet and stuff likely do anyway, and those who don't won't think you're really weird for it.
Everyone in my current circle of people know what memes are though, but it wasn't like that in highschool.

Re: Teacher Fail
can you focus on teaching math instead of distracting your students

Re: Teacher Fail
You know that most kids don't really like maths a lot and thus plain boringly teaching them isn't going to be the very best solution.
They must come to your class, expecting something that is at least slightly more interesting. They must like you, in a way.

Re: Teacher Fail
Just putting this out there that posting meme's in your class is the type of thing will have the one kid taking pictures and posting it on sites like imgur or reddit and have comments about how you are the coolest teacher ever. HOWEVER in a situation where kids are mainly just using their "facebook machines" they will find this somewhat like an inside joke and be confused about what the pictures actually mean

Re: Teacher Fail
Nothing wrong with helping the kids think the teacher is interesting. Though I think the best way to get the kids to want to come to your class is just have a personality they all would like to see.
Posters are... okay, maybe only use one of them though. The rest should just be on you as a character. It's been 4 years since high school for me, but I recall the vast majority of kids loved the teachers that knew good humor (think of stand up comedian quality). They also loved teachers that are really outspoken and are very "out there" in personality, but still very strict on grades. Bottom line of all this though, it's impossible to please all the kids. I mean, you might get lucky and strike every class you teach where everyone doesn't mind you and or likes you. In the event where there's someone that's a "party pooper" so to speak. Nothing you can really do but try to get them motivated somehow. If a parent comes up to you and says you're not doing your job teaching the "party pooper". There's really nothing you can say except explain your case and bear the bitching. |

Re: Teacher Fail
This thread reminds me of my geometry teacher a little over 6 years ago -- he seemed really timid at the start of the term, but he was really witty and eventually started using his love for math to make the students have a good time.
I still remember him teaching us the congruency theorems of triangles, mentioning that "there's no ASS congruence in geometry" in reference to the other theorems, lol (he was a stickler in ensuring that we said SSA as opposed to ASS). It's just a matter of keeping your students interested and showing them that you legitimately care for their success. |

Re: Teacher Fail
In the end it wont matter anyway, because this is usually what they are looking at for 3/4 of the time they sit at the desk. IMO, a good teacher interacts with their students and keeps them entertained. This however is nearly impossible. A lot of teenagers disconnect from adults because they think they already know everything and are dying to get out of their desk and into somebody else's pants. The only group of teenagers that seem inclined to give a damn what anyone else thinks seems to be the (Advanced for America) Academic grade students, of whom you don't really need to work hard for their approval half the time. --unless of course you're dealing with Jack Dickhead who thinks he's still bored with his studies and wish you would shut up or teach something interesting. |

Re: Teacher Fail
my highschool was completely anti-technology.
We had those shitty iMacs from like 1998 (it was 2007) In 2005 they banned 'electronics' from the school. This huge umbrella covered anything from cdplayers, cellphones, they even took away my portable cassette player. being the drama queen that I was back then I raised a huge fuss over that because I was listening to it on the bus and they took it away because of that. I wasn't even on school grounds yet jesus I heard in 2010 they banned watches and non-school approved calculators. They only approved of the ti-80, so even if you're using some piece of shit office calculator they will take it away. Combine all this with cameras everywhere and they STILL wonder why people spray paint swastikas all over the place there. It's like c'mon retards you really think it's because of the Aryan Nation? It's because we all think you're nazis now stop goddamnit anyway good luck with the teaching ...just dont be a nazi |
