Hurricane Katrina
Just recently i was watching HBO and they showed a commercial about this Hurricane Katrina documentary theyre doing. These people were being interviewed and they were all like, "wheres the federal government, we're down here stranded, sick and hurt and we need help". "Its the governments fault all these people are dying.
And you know what, that makes me angry. Because they were told to evacuate, they had time. But did they? No. The government, and police told them to leave New Orleans but they didnt, and now they blame the government. I dont know about you guys, but i think that is wrong. Discuss. |

Re: Hurricane Katrina
Dear God don't get me started on the Katrina fiasco.
Because then I will start yelling about how the ****ing idiot citizens of New Orleans re-elected Ray Nagin despite the fact that while his people were stranded in their doomed city, he was doing nothing, and then he sat around and blamed other people. Like, yeah, it's okay for people to be pissed that they weren't helped. It's no secret that many of the people left behind in New Orleans simply didn't have the means to evacuate, but it was Ray Nagin's administration who should have used the hundreds of school buses at his disposal to cart those people out. It's not like we didn't know the hurricane was coming, and that it was omg huge. |

Re: Hurricane Katrina
They couldnt, as in not enough money, no car, no one to help. This is critical thinking, come prepared to think.

Re: Hurricane Katrina
I wasn't sure if it was either that they didn't want to or they couldn't. Then again it was a combination of both. Then that's their fault for not leaving(if they could) even thought it was the highest category amongst hurricanes.

Re: Hurricane Katrina
Complacency is a very dangerous thing. I don't have a huge knowlegde of what actually went down. But I've heard that the reason some of them didn't leave was because they survived storms that have either been similar or whatnot to Katrina. So they figure they would just wait it out but then it turned out to be an eye-opener for them.

Re: Hurricane Katrina
The fact that they'd survived other storms was certainly part of it, but another major player was the fact that the problem would've been WAY less severe had the levys not broken, and the levys shouldn't have broken, because the government had been given plenty of time and money to repair them/rebuild them before the storm hit.
I agree that the people could have done alot more to get themselves out of there, but there's not much the government can do to evacuate a whole city in a few days. |

Re: Hurricane Katrina
Evacuation plans could have been much more effective if the city hadn't ****ed around until the very last second. Yeah, a few days isn't a lot of time, but it's certainly better than, "Ohshi, it hasn't really broken down yet, and all my constituents are still stranded in my city. Better blame the president."
