New Sonic game coming next year, this time with a little more 2D
http://kotaku.com/5355153/sonic-retu...new-2d-hd-game
Brand new game, full 2D, HD graphics. It's identified as a return to the Sonic of old. They've finally learned from their mistakes. Some of you may recall a HD remake of Sonic 2 that a bunch of fans are putting together. That thing is still not done, and the art is coming in really slowly, so it won't be done for a while yet. But this is something from Sega themselves, so the art should be top shelf. All there is is a teaser video yet, but I don't think Sega could bungle this, as from what I've heard, they're more recent 2D games on portable systems played just fine. I'm optimistic. What you folks are thinking?

Re: New Sonic game coming next year, this time with a little more 2D
As much as I'd love to convince myself that the Sega won't screw this one up, part of me is still set on the time-proven idea that they will stick exactly one thing into the game in an effort to make it 'appeal to the masses' (or should I say, cutting corners), and in the process, alienating those who still have brains in their heads.
I've also had a recent fallout with the Sonic fandom as a whole, which is why such news gives me a very bad taste in my mouth, despite the small glimmer of hope that may still be there. |

I read a Nintendo Power where the creator of Sonic stated that he's been trying to kill Sonic, but the fans won't let his dream come true. Why would he try to make a good game?

Re: New Sonic game coming next year, this time with a little more 2D
haha, what Jenova said
I randomly bought Sonic Rush for DS a couple weeks ago. I haven't played it much, and I need to look up some instructions or something (no in-game tutorial is pretty bleh), but it seems kinda clunky compared to older games. The run-really-fast thing (y button) is pretty cool, but it doesn't seem to be fully integrated. Does anyone have better input on this game, or on the sequel? The trailer said "2D Adventure." If this game sucks I'm suing for false advertisement. |

This is the last chance I'm giving the Sonic franchise. If this next game doesn't do well, I am never purchasing a Sonic game as long as i live. (unless it's one through 3)

I really liked playing sonic back in the old times, maybe this will be cool enough for me to play again.

The better not ruin this.
If so I'll end Sonic and all the rest of those hedgehog bast*rds myself, and the creator can thank me himself. |

What if they do it the Capcom way and do a Sonic 4 with Genesis-style graphics? I don't see why companies aren't cramming out more retro nostalgia trips like that. They must be relatively easy to produce if they can fund the project by selling the entire game for a few bucks on download services. And frankly, I don't think a fully 2D Sonic game in HD would be all that much harder than a new "old-school" game ala Megaman 9. It'd probably roughly as hard to design levels for, roughly as hard to code in general. The only difference is that artists would need to use high resolution drawings (or 3D renders) rather than pixel art, and music could be fully realized music rather than 8bit beeps and boops. But seriously, what I really want I think is an engine that can recreate all of the Genesis era games in HD. Design some new artwork and new arrangements on the music, recreating the original feel but in HD, add a few new levels maybe, probably a level editor, maybe a few new characters. I'd rather play the classics in HD than be limited to playing a whole new game in HD. ps I haven't played any of the portable 2D games, but was Sonic Rush really not that great? Have you guys played any of the Advance games?

They just need to make a sonic in the old 16-bit installment, and i'll be happy.
Although i really did enjoy sonic andventures. I was a really fun sonic game. I believe that was the last sonic game they made right.

Man I haven't been on this site for a long time....
Anyway! I recall seeing the Sonic 2 HD version..god knows how long awhile back. Maybe half a year to 7 or 8 months and I was sure it was Sega working on that project from what I remember reading. The only fan based sonic project I was aware of was that 3d one that's really taking it's slow-ass time to surface. But I guess I was wrong. PS: Hi JS PSS: I own sonic rush and it's not THAT bad. In terms of Sonic adv. games...I really enjoyed 1 and 2 for GBA, not so much 3 though. Edit:Super_kid, I agree with you. It would have to be Sonic adv2:battle though, the 1st one was kinda...eh. |

Sonic 2 HD only exists as a fan project right now, and although progress is slow, it is active and moving forward. As far as I know, all they have left to do is put together the art and music, then pump it out. As far as I know, they have all of the sprites for Sonic done, and none for any of the other playable characters. They're working on putting together stage art for Emerald Hill Zone (still on the first stage!), but music is progressing a lot better. I guess once they get the art done, they'll work on putting together multiplayer and other new features, like online play or a level editor or something. It's still a long ways from being finished, but since it's Sonic 2 rather than something new, I'd say it has more promise to be a fun game than this new one from Sega... even if Sega is able to deliver better looking art. It'd be a shame to see their work go to waste, but I wish Sega would just give them a cease and desist and put together a similar project of their own.

Re: New Sonic game coming next year, this time with a little more 2D
I've only played through a bit of Sonic Rush. It's not enough to tell, and I'm lacking information on how to play the game correctly, but I haven't found it to be overly impressive.
The only Sonic Advance game I've played is the first one, and I still love it. Biggest flaw in my opinion is everything involving the chaos emeralds. The bonus games are too hard to find and too crappy to play. |

Heard about it, I made a lets play sonic 3 video in tribute to the new game coming out I haven't uploaded it yet but I plan on soon. It seems this time they are trying to bring back the old 2d interface the way sonic should be in the first place.

I'm very optimistic. Very optimistic.
I mean when they use the name "Project Needlemouse" I think I should get my hopes up. It was the name of the project behind Sonic's debut.

Re: New Sonic game coming next year, this time with a little more 2D
I tried to play Sonic 2 on my HDTV and my brain exploded at how ugly the graphics looked on my large LCD.
Maybe I should keep a small CRT screen around just for playing old games???

I love the old 8bit and 16bit looks, also the fact that anything other than component and HDMI inputs looks terrible, especially composite.

I must be one of the few people that enjoyed the recent 3D Sonic games like Sonic Unleashed then... o_o
Looking forward to this one, too. |
