Zelda by far.
I don't like shooters, which is what Metroid has become, and I simply DESPISE Mario, so Legend of Zelda get's my vote.

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
its a closes call for me between Mario and Zelda, but i like Zelda better.
I mean Metroid is cool but from what i've played it doesn't really have a smooth gameplay when its 1st person, but the early games where cool. I like Zelda because of the level design is usally good, plus I like all the wpns you can use. But Mario is awesome too. |

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
Mario games really aren't my style.
What is popular is never the best. Metriod Fusion was great, but my vote goes with Zelda. I love Zelda; I always will.

Mario, mainly because it's spread so far into so many directions. There's pretty much something for everybody, except for shooter lovers.
Mario just has that quality that allows itself to morph into silly sports games, mini games, 2D scrollers, 3D scrollers (lol) RPG and action adventure etc etc etc And all of them are really fun to me. Zelda is amazing too though. |

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
I'd say Zelda, because of the storyline detail and open space. The puzzles, landscape, enemies, bosses and items are great plus all the sidequests give a better play value.
But if Nintendo could take side scrolling Metroid and make it 3D-ish like they did in New Super Mario Brothers, that to me, would make it a better franchise than the other two. Since I like the gameplay of Metroid better than any other, just the feeling of shoot/jump controlled button mashing makes it fun for me.

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
1. Zelda - always an awesome storyline, gameplay
2. Metriod - I find Samus to just simply be cool, way cooler than mario, and a bit cooler than link. Gameplay is generally fun and fairly innovative, often I think of Metriod as a FPS Zelda. 3. Mario - Too kiddy for me, Mario just seems geared more towards ages 3-15. My favorite charachter of the three is Samus though.

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
Metroid completely developed off course and isn't near the same anymore, so it kinda ended with me at Super Metroid.
Zelda continues to impress me but the games are still way too easy. You have a harder time FINDING the boss in a particular dungeon and then owning him in 30seconds afterwards. Mario obviously has been making terrible games for a while now. The only exception, SSBM and the newest Super Smash Brawl for the Wii which looks quite something. Better franchise? Mario obviously. The games never stop coming and never stop selling and like someone mentioned above, games geared towards kids is the way to make your money.

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
The best thing about the Mario spin-offs are that they're all at least pretty decent and playable. Of course the best games are always the platformers and surprisingly the RPGs, though It's definitely more of a franchise than Zelda and Metroid, those are more like... series.
I guess Zelda, then Metroid, then Mario. But it's really, really hard to compare.

Im going with zelda because of its storyline, gameplay, and creativity. Metroid is pretty cool whereas Mario is childish.

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
The good thing about Mario games is the fact they cover about every game genre. (Platforming, Racing, RPGs, Sports, and more...) So, there's pretty much something for everyone with Mario. Paper Mario still has to be one of the best RPGs ever.
Yeah, Super Metroid is definitely my favorite game ever, but it's pretty much the only one in the series I've played other then Fusion. The Prime games look cool, but for some reason I don't want to play them. Zelda is overrated, and I've gradually enjoyed the games less and less. I know people are going to be all mad at me, but honestly, I thought Twilight Princess sucked... Except the story. And on top of that, the music sucked in it. More old school style Zelda games like A Link to the Past, and the two Oracle games pl0x. I pick Mario. Say wha? Dude, I know tons of older people who love Mario games. |

Zelda games rule!! I like Mario too, but it isn't as adventurous as the Zelda games. As for Metroid, I don't really play Metroid games.

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
I say Metroid because they provide a nice level of difficulty and the transition to 3-D didn't suck when it had the potential for disaster. I hate shooters, but I love the Prime series. The 2-D games, particularly Super Metroid, manage to take a simple idea and make a fun and deep game out of it.
Each game sticks to some element of traditional Metroid gameplay, but they put enough variety in each version to make the game experience different every time. I also like the storylines, which is odd considering the storylines aren't that well developed. Metroid games tend to give the player a better overall experience and accomplishment upon completing it. The big criticism of Metroid is that the series is formulaic, but the same could be said of Zelda. My biggest criticism of Zelda is not only the formulaic gameplay and the lack of any real difficulty. The puzzles are great, but they range from being fun and clever to annoying and frustrating. Mario games don't stick to a strict formula, though they follow similar ideas. No two Mario games (barring SMB and SMB2 JP) can be said to play exactly the same whereas Zelda and Metroid games seem to be frequently guilty of this. The difference is that Mario games don't provide much in terms of difficulty, storyline, or depth. They're simple games to learn, which is why the franchise is so popular among casual gamers.

Re: Whats a better franchise? Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?
Zelda, easily.
The story-lines have always been really good (I don't know about anyone else, but I liked OoT and MM particularly), the puzzles are always there to keep you guessing. As a few have said, Mario is good, but it seems to be geared toward the younger group of gamers. And Metroid is just, well, meh (for lack of a better word) |
