So I decided I am going to make an SM Theme
The idea is a full theme, but I haven't much experience with coding, or even SM for that matter (the idea is to get to know both)
Is there a place I can go to get a full rundown on what to expect when doing this-- functions of the metrics.ini, tricks/tips.. etc?-- or will I be running around in the dark for the most part? If anyone has any sort of helpful advice for this, I'd appreciate it. Even if it is just telling me which version of Stepmania to theme. Last edited by Pseudo Enigma; 11-29-2012 at 01:32 AM.. |

I'd suggest trying to get in contact with Xiaounlimited (or however you spell his username) he'd probably be able to give you a ton of info and his themes are really boss so his info'd be really good

Re: So I decided I am going to make an SM Theme
all there really is to it is using pre-existing theme elements as base templates to work from and doing trial and error with number positioning in the metrics.ini. it helps if you know how the numbers position and coordinate in the window so that it's easy to guess rough numbers to use
this is what xiao and I do btw, except I was never really into theming because I'm lazy

The most knowledgeable guy I know about theme-making is k//eternal. But he isn't on FFR, I don't even know if he's still active.

On his website (I only remember the old name "anarchy.chaos.dolphin.name" which still works) there is an email adress k.eternal@gmail.com, maybe that's a good idea to know if k//eternal's still active.

Re: So I decided I am going to make an SM Theme
hmm thanks, I'll look into this.
I was thinking I'd have to basically steal/copy off of other themes for certain elements. But I didn't want to have to do that. Oh well. |

You're pretty despreate to bump a thread after less than 24 hrs....
On another note Jousway know his coding but since he's stubborn he won't help you with anythign but stepmania 5 or related to it. |

Re: So I decided I am going to make an SM Theme
I know how to do theming with ini's, sprites, xml's and lua's for like every fucking SM version (including neonfm, itg versions and a load more), but people dot pay me enough, and besides you are proably going to make a fucking theme for 3.95 which needs to die so have fun!

You seem upset.
Also, the OP never specified which version of SM he was going to use. In fact, he even asked which version to use to theme with.

Re: So I decided I am going to make an SM Theme
Picking what version you want to theme for depends on what you want your theme to do. Some things just aren't possible on older versions, while other things would take quite a bit of work.
As someone who's themed for StepMania the past 8 years or so, it's always better to sketch things out and mock screens up before starting development. |

anyway yes I will do some concept sketches on paper then go into photoshop and clean up. Much easier for me to play around with things. I just need to know what the program is capable of before I go and limit myself to just what is in the default theme. |

Re: So I decided I am going to make an SM Theme
With StepMania 5, it's more of a "what CAN'T I do?" question, so if you're targeting SM5, I'd just suggest you do whatever you like, with the following notes:
* Any mouse-based interface is only going to work in Windows at the moment because nobody else wrote any mouse code for the other platforms (well there was that time I tried to get it working in Linux...) * Some screens can't be changed around too much (from their default); these include Options Menus. I'm probably missing some more stuff, too. |
