Schools start tommorrow for many people in the South.
I am actually looking forward to my senior year. I won't be on much here anymore, I have a job now and grades to worry about yet again. 7:00 sharp in the A.M.
When do you guys start? So I can bitch and complain about how early my school does.

Re: Schools start tommorrow for many people in the South.
Advice for incoming high school seniors from a recent high school graduate:
1) Enjoy the **** out of your senior year. It's the only year as a teenager that you get to be at the top of your society, so make use of that. 2) College applications are long, arduous, and last the entire year. Get your essays done and make them general enough that you can send them with more than one application, and get your full application in well before the deadline. Keep in mind that you're going to have to keep colleges updated with your SAT scores and AP scores as you take the tests. You'll also have to deal with other things once you get an acceptance and make a decision. Turning in your application is the -first- thing you have to do, not the last. 3) Balance your school work and your social life. Don't skimp out on either, because your senior year of high school is vitally important in both ways. It's common sense, but don't blow off classes after getting a college acceptance, because they can still turn you down if you do badly during the second half of the year. But at the same time, don't spend all damn day studying. As a senior, you're probably going to be afforded a significant amount of independence by being able to drive all over the place, hang out with friends, and do other Adult(tm) things. You need to take this year to tune this newly-found independence so that you don't go too crazy when you're left to fend for yourself in college. 4) If you're going to drink or do drugs or smoke, be remotely intelligent about it. If you're only drinking because beer is available to you or for some other asinine reason, don't do it. Obviously most parents and other adults are going to want you to not do any of this at all, but inevitably you're not going to listen to them. Just make sure you have a damn good reason for wanting to break the law, and don't be retarded about it. 5) If you haven't taken the SAT or ACT, and you plan on going to college, do it as soon as humanly possible. The test focuses mainly on things from your first two years anyway, so the longer you wait, the worse you're likely to do on it. Additionally you'll have multiple chances to retake it and colleges tend to only count your highest score per section (at least for the SAT). Look into SAT subject tests as well if your college requires them. 6) More college advice: visit campuses. Use your breaks to talk to people at the colleges you're interested in about life there, what sort of requirements there are to get in, the sort of financial aid you can expect, etc. You can find pretty much all of this out without going to the campus itself, but it's always nice to be able to talk to a real person and see the whole thing for yourself. 7) Fill out FAFSA as soon after January 1st as you can, for you American students. It is the one document that will be absolutely required for any financial aid, and the sooner you submit it, the more quickly you'll be able to get your financial situation worked out. Additionally, for those who turn 18 sometime this year, you'll need to register with the Selective Service before you can submit the FAFSA. You've heard most of this already but it's pretty much all true. Granted there are some things you can take liberties with, and you don't want to panic about your senior year because it's supposed to be the best year of your life so far. Just don't be retarded, use some common sense, and work your priorities so that you get the full Senior Year Experience. |
