Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Round 6!
Well I would certainly hope it doesn't happen during school again. The summer is definitely the ideal time to have a tournament, with much less dropouts.
who knows, we'll see how it turns out in the future.

There's nothing wrong with bi-annual tournaments. You don't have to play in both. It gives people with different schedules an opportunity to play. Our Winter is other people's summer, keep that in mind.

Not only that, but not all of the players who play this game are under 18. Some of them might be taking college classes during the summer too, haha.

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Round 6!
Summer would be nice but if not no biggie, I was just wondering to see how many months of practice I can squeeze in before the next so hopefully I'm not out so early haha

Well considering beary was the hot topic of today he has a good deal of his ranks filled out. But hey lets just keep making snide remarks in the thread to instigate.

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Round 6!
I think when it comes to future officials shorter rounds should be considered. This would reduce the chance of people skillboosting as much. It's really getting old that we have to go through this every single tournament.
If I truly believed beary were sandbagging I would have done something about it but the kid has over 100 plays on Beatrice as is and notes that with restarts it's around 600 plays on his profile. It's not like this entire thing has been coming to him easily. Had he been blasting through all of the last few rounds I might have suspected something, but he hasn't. |

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Round 6!
I haven't really been in official tournaments before, but I really doubt a perfect run until round six is a proper idea. I'm pretty sure many people here have been in officials before, and I see them posting in this thread too. This suggests that it's really not "just a skillboost". I can't say I really care that much about it personally, but it does kind of annoy me that psychoangel just keeps saying it's a natural and normal skillboost. I mean, if it were, then this would have happened in all the previous officials too, right? (Did it?)
I've also heard rumours about beary having another account before this one and having some decent scores on it, but I obviously can't tell for certain. On an unrelated note, it would be a good thing to at least force contestants to have recorded scores on at least an X amount of songs. Letting people play every song in-game would be too much of a requirement and make many people stop from joining; but a particular (not too high) percentage sounds fair (e.g. 200).

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Round 6!
In previous tournaments there have been people who AAA up to the end. This is nothing new. I'm not going to repeat myself 1000 times. There were people in D1 scoring well on an FGO in the one tournament that ended everyone with FGOs.

Also with most of the logic spewed around here, Alloyus should be in D7 right now (and he'd currently be in 4th place). Mmmmmmm. |

The 5th official I was in D2 and they were sitting there Low SDGing or AAAing X-Tinction and I still can't do that file to this day lol. It's really not odd at all for a D3 player to be able to score well on some low FMO's and none the less Eternal Drain is debatable because it's fairly easy for most of it and people were stating that it's not an FMO when it was released, but the tune changes once someone AAAs it. It's silly really. Plus I think people forget about all the rivalry threads there are for the lower divisions, these people have been busting their butts improving. Also wasn't it pmonibuv that went from like D1 to D6 in a matter of like 5 months. Some people do skillboost rather quickly. I know I went from D1 to SDGing FMOs pretty damn fast myself. |

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Round 6!
The scores are entirely dependent on the structure of the songs and who is good at what's contained within the file. The fact of the matter is this: everyone currently left in the tournament is scoring relatively well on their respective files. Everyone is throwing a fit about the first place person skillboosting/not being in their division, when (in the lower divisions) there are people with relatively close scores.
All of the divisions have relatively close score spreads, and yet particular people are being isolated because they have improved substantially. With that being said, there is absolutely nothing saying that those people couldn't have improved past some of the people left in a division above them. It's likely that all of the D1 players still standing are easily better than the bottom 1/3rd of D2, D2 -> D3, D3 -> D4, etc. The rate of improvement isn't determinable. There are people in D6 that would have been slaughtered in D7, so I left them where they belonged. Those who had substantially stronger FGO/FSO scores than those who were in the top 10% of the division were placed in D7, and I hand-picked these people with clear intentions. This is the precise reason that Etienne/yo man/alloyus/shadow were left in D6 at the start of the tournament. They're easily D7 now with the scores they're getting, but they weren't before. It isn't fair to stick someone in a division when they don't even have a clear shot of winning in the division below based off of what you see in their public and token ranks. Outside factors like StepMania scores can be relevant, but only for lower divisions. People can easily cheat by changing StepMania metrics, which could overinflate their scores and make it look like they are doing better when they really are not. I could easily think of at least one person that I know who did this, but for the sake of avoiding conflict, I won't mention it. There is no tried-and-true method for placing people in a large-scale tournament like this, because there are a number of factors that prevent people from being properly placed. I'll mention igotrhythm for example, who was probably a high-end D2 player until he went out of his way to change his keyboard setup. He skill-boosted immediately, from D2-level to at least D4-level. When I mean immediately, it was literally upon switching setups -- he said it himself in the FFR scores thread. xXOpkillerXx went from VC AAAs to FGO AAAs in a pretty short time, and we all know that's a pretty high skill curve to conquer -- not many people break that wall in under a year. pmonibuv went from D1 to booflagging Time to Eye in about half of a year. KrazyKitsune went from D1 in the 7th official, to D5 now. There are a number of examples that can easily be brought up. The only way to prevent issues like this is to completely restructure the tournament in a way that removes divisional setups, like any other rhythm game. The only thing that inhibits how well you do is your own skill, just like any other gaming tournament. Unfortunately, with the divisional system being in place as long as it has, it would be an absolutely ridiculous radical change in setup and users would not take to it at all. There's so much that can be said about this, but a solution will never happen. So please, can we just drop it and have a good time in the tournament? Stop worrying about winning a tournament for a game where you mindlessly smash your keys in rhythm to really strange songs, because it's not a huge life accomplishment. |

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Round 6!
ugh, I'm 99.9% sure the answer is going to be 'no' for obvious reasons, but (since I'm at a loss otherwise)
If I record a vid of me playing Ordeal on an offline Velocity engine, can the score obtained in the vid be added to the dashboard? I realize I'm using a tool that not everyone else in D7 has access to, but I think I might be the only person in D7 that Velocity is unusable for (I know LG/smartdude/samurai/Dynamo aren't affected by the 100% CPU bs, and Alex uses R2...not sure about ~Zeta~ or Op tbh) Again, I'm expecting a 'no', but it doesn't hurt to ask I suppose. I can consistently pull BFs/2g on a Velocity engine, but I'm nowhere close to that on R2. It's just frustrating having to keep a score for the round that I know I could easily improve given the proper circumstances. |

Aj and I are trying to think of a fair solution for you OWA. It does suck that the engine has been behaving so poorly.
