Okay, Lenovo is ****. We have two thinkpads at our school for two projectors. They were tablets, priced around $2000. Absolute ****. The tablet functionality is irrelevant; the design is ugly as can be (it perpetually looks like secondhand ****), and it refuses to work like the top-notch laptop $2000 bought it for.

Gateway has some sexy designs, but they are ****. We have Gateway desktops at my school that overheat or bluescreen constantly. If you can't depend on a desktop, which is supposed to be able to tolerate so much more in so many different ways, how can you trust a laptop from the same company?

Any AMD processor is ****, because it comes with a ****ty AMD motherboard. Intel-only is the way to go. AMD is considered a "budget" processor because it simply can't match the same-generation Intel processors in benchmarks by a long shot. DO NOT get an AMD processor.

My suggestion is to go with an HP or Dell. Both have sexy designs and are known for delivering quality in their notebooks. I'm on a Dell right now and love it, but I would've gone with HP too. Dell just had a better deal, but you'll be satisfied with either.

Toshiba is actually pretty good too.

Sony is good, but only when you get into the very high price range.

I'd go with Dell before i went with HP.
Acer is also good but i wouldn't really go with them for gaming of any kind.

I forgot to mention Toshiba. Toshiba is very good.

You can't trust anything from Sony. It'll self-destruct on you. You've been warned.

Acer really hasn't made much of a name for itself. I've seen some good deals on Acer notebooks, but I really haven't heard enough feedback to make a judgment call.

Toshiba is good, like I've told many people, the P105 is what my brother has, awesome laptop.

Supposedly Acer makes some pretty good notebooks, but I haven't had much personal experience with them.

Sony is weird, they out date their parts way to fast. And they also tend to have a lot of problems, yet sometimes they actually get it right. My notebook has been amazing since i got it, but that might be because it was $2,500.

I don't know if AMD is really a budget proc. Before the conroe's came out, their FX-62's were the best you could find. I wouldn't count AMD out of the race by any stretch of the imagination, just because Intel has Dell.

Good luck putting it together and making it work 100% with little to no experience. I wouldn't open up a laptop and change any parts other than RAM for any reason.

My friend bought a bomb ass HP laptop for roughly 1500 and that was about 6 months ago. I own a Dell and my only complaint is the battery life. Other than that, it's awesome and was roughly 1200 3 years ago.

I have an HP, and I love it. No problems at whatsoever. Like Nforcer said, the design for the new HP's are really cool, and they are reliable. My roommate has a Dell, and it seems to work fine too. The only thing I hate about his is that it isn't a widescreen. I can't stand going from my laptop, which is a widescreen, and back to one that isn't.

I went to CompUSA the other week, and they had some really good deals on their HP's. I'm sure there are other good laptops, but I'd go with the new HP's.

HPs are nice, but seriously, consider an Intel dual core processor. My HP laptop's P4HT seems so slow compared to my dad's dual Dell, both have 2GB of RAM.

If it saves any money, get a really small hard drive, you can always add externals, I've got 3 for a total of 740GB of space (every Black Friday, I hop on insane deals).
