Tests show that out of the box the iphone5 has better sound quality, and a more powerful driver. (Compared to nexus 5 and other android devices, but you'd have to google a specific one to be sure.) More importantly, you should be converting your music from FLAC to v0 (lossless to lossy) and then putting it on your phone without any other conversions. That will guarantee good audio quality regardless of the machine.

I can personally say that Nexus 5 has decent sound quality. Not amazing, but still pretty good.

My android still sounds good for being 4 1/2 years old, but apple seems like it would have had experience with sound on portable devices more so to start with if they front themselves on portable music devices... or at least they should, the games not getting any newer. but you might sacrifice battery life choosing an apple from what I've heard. Re: better music sound quality?
Oh fuck Apple, they clearly have been eloquent enough about not providing sustainable music devices when they dropped manufacturing their iconic 5-year obsoleted iPod Classic about a week or two instead of actually upgrading the damn thing. These corporate dumbwits can't even adapt their products to the current fucking market. Oh great, what's the proposed equivalent now? Something I can't even control blindly and has barely enough space for Dopesmoker? Some other phone/device that's gonna cost me a shit ton because of some useless features I already have access to?
At this point they're just flogging their dicks around. Where's the alternative? That's the real fucking question. |

Re: better music sound quality?
you're not going to notice the difference with your shitty headphones (only zageron has implied that he can do better)

Re: better music sound quality?
Even with good headphones could you possibly notice a difference with any handheld device?

Re: better music sound quality?
So I've been actually doing a ton of research lately on some entry level audiophile gear (spending around $800 total for my new audio setup) so I have a little bit of information I think.
Most handheld devices are going to have a pretty cheap/crappy stock DAC (Digital Analog Converter, thing that changes your digital audio signal into an analog one that your headphones can work with). As far as power output goes, they will be fine for most headphones out there, and they won't have a significant noise issue. That being said if anyone can notice the difference between say, an iPhone and a Nexus 5 for example, I would be pretty impressed. The differences are going to be negligable as both devices are likely using low cost DACs. If you really want to get something better look into a FiiO E17 or something like that for portable improvement. I would really only recommend something like that though if you have a pair of high impedence headphones that you're looking to drive (most headphones nowadays will drive pretty easily, but I've personally known Grados to be relatively difficult to drive for example, it all comes down to the specific model). If you're using cheap headphones then all of this is pointless though. |

Re: better music sound quality?
^Basically what Wafles said.
iPhones tend to sound cleaner than most Android devices straight out of the box but the difference is negligible. Invest in a good IEM/Headphone and an external DAC/amp and you can get great sound with either phone. As an aside, you may need an amp to drive the headphones properly even if they are rated at a low impedance (e.g. AKG K701) or to eliminate ground noise (e.g. custom IEMs) Last edited by Evnoir; 09-15-2014 at 12:35 PM.. |

Re: better music sound quality?
you're not going to really hear a difference honestly lol
only difference you'll hear is dependent on the bitrate of the audio file, and even then, if you're listening through average earbuds, it will be barely noticeable i'd probably say given the background of iphone and ipod, it's probably got a better digital to analog converter, though
