Re: 7-11s around the nation turn into Kwik E Marts
who in their right mind would think this is selling out?
imagine how much work they put into doing this! probably not alot but its still really clever to be honest though when i read this i thought it meant all 711's are becoming kwik-e-marts, that would have been sweet for awhile..

Businesses can't "sell out" (or, if you want to twist the definition, EVERY business "sells out"). Their sole purpose is to make money. People/bands/etc. "sell out" when they focus more attention on making money via endorsement deals than on doing so via their primary form of income or somehow revoke some principle for the sake of money. What is it that 7-11 does to make money? Oh yeah. THEY'RE A CONVENIENCE STORE. Plus, do you or anybody else hold some special attachment to 7-11? This isn't like a band's following suddenly boycotting new albums because they endorse something wrong or anything like that. This is a convenience store doing some damn good marketing. The very idea that a convenience store can "sell out" is laughable. --Guido http://andy.mikee385.com |

I do see your point, their goal is to make money, but the same can be said for musicians. For example, The Black Eyed Peas "sold out" when they changed the name of their hit single "Lets Get Retarded" to "Lets Get it Started" because Wal-Mart threatened to not sell their album. I say 7-11 "sold out" because they aren't just a neighborhood convenience store. 7-11 has a sort of cult following that not all stores have, and they changed the store's entire image. Maybe I'm just rubbed the wrong way by this because I dislike The Simpsons.
And how is my avatar perpetuating a stereotype? |

I never suggested it was perpetuating a stereotype. I was, to my amusement, equating the level of intelligence of the post with that of the person in the avatar.
Anyway, bands make money by making music. They sell out when they do endorsement deals and the like. Changing some lyrics to a song does not constitute "selling out" to Wal Mart; it means they're trying to survive by doing what they do: making music. They didn't endorse Wal Mart or anything like that. 7-11 was a convenience store and still is a convenience store. Now they're just one that pulls in customers better than others. I would wager that they're paying whoever owns The Simpsons to be able to do this. It's hardly "selling out" if you're buying the publicity. It's advertising. --Guido http://andy.mikee385.com |

Don't even compare the intelligence of my post to that of Al Sharpton. No matter how low that of the post may have been, it is still higher then Al Sharpton's.
I seriously, seriously, seriously doubt that 7-11 is paying The Simpsons to participate in a large-scale advertising campaign for an upcoming movie. Is Myspace paying them as well? This is advertising the movie, not the store. |

It's marketing, but marketing doesn't get much cooler than that, I wonder if the ones around my area will do this as well...

Re: 7-11s around the nation turn into Kwik E Marts
The black eyed pees selling out would be if they changed the song name from "let's get retarded" to "Let's all get down to wal-mart this weekend for some stuff!"
I think the Kwik-E-Mart thing is a great idea, 7-11's here in Alberta are just DYING to Mac's, and they one's that are still up are really run down, if only that change came to Canada. Also, I hope this change stays permanent. 7-11's are going 24 hours and it's an outdated name anyways. The founder made the name because of the hours, and now that they changed the hours because of today's society, it calls for a change, a Kwik-E-Mart change! |
